## Characteristics Seamanite is a hydrated manganese borophosphate, valued by collectors for its unique chemical composition and attractive crystal forms. It most commonly occurs as slender, elongated crystals with a pyramidal cross-section, which can reach several centimeters in length. These crystals often form radial or haphazardly arranged aggregates, growing on the surface of the host rock. Due to its rarity and specific formation conditions, it is a sought-after mineral and an adornment for advanced collections. ## Physical Properties Seamanite crystals are characterized by a vitreous luster and are usually transparent to translucent. Their Mohs hardness is 4, making them relatively soft and susceptible to scratching. The mineral's density is estimated at approximately 3.1 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Seamanite most often exhibits colors ranging from pale yellow, straw-yellow, through honey shades, to light pink or wine-yellow. The coloration is usually delicate and evenly distributed within the crystal. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in 1930 in the Chicagon Mine on Iron River Hill in Michigan, USA. Its name commemorates Arthur E. Seaman (1858-1937), professor of mineralogy and geology at Michigan College of Mines, who first drew attention to this unusual mineral. The scientific description was prepared by E.H. Kraus, W.A. Seaman (the discoverer's son), and C.B. Slawson. ## Uses Seamanite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible.

## Identification Seamanite is recognizable primarily by its characteristic crystal habit – long, slender, acicular or prismatic, often in radial aggregates. Its typical pale yellow to pink color, vitreous luster, and occurrence in a specific geological environment (manganese formations) are key diagnostic features. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals Seamanite is sometimes confused with other acicular minerals. It can be distinguished from visually similar sussexite, which reacts with hydrochloric acid, unlike seamanite. Other similar minerals, such as natrolite or scolecite, occur in different parageneses (mainly in gas vesicles in volcanic rocks). ## Crystal Forms Crystals are elongated along the c-axis, taking the form of needles or slender prisms. They are often terminated by pyramid faces, giving them a sharp, pointed appearance. They form fan-shaped, radial, or haphazardly entangled aggregates on the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Seamanite is a secondary mineral, formed as a result of hydrothermal or metamorphic processes acting on manganese deposits. It forms in fractures and voids within oxidized manganese ores, often in association with other rare phosphate and borate minerals. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with minerals such as sussexite, hausmannite, pyrochroite, shigaite, and various manganese oxides. In its type locality (Michigan, USA), it is found in association with calcite and hematite. ## Localities The most important and historical locality for seamanite is its type locality – the Chicagon Mine in Iron County, Michigan, USA. It is also known from the Bengal iron mine in nearby Stambaugh. Outside the USA, its presence has been reported in manganese ore mines in Kuruman, South Africa, and Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

## Quality Criteria The most prized seamanite specimens are those with well-formed, long, and sharply terminated crystals of intense pink or honey-yellow color. Rich, radial aggregates covering a significant area of the rock matrix are also highly valued. The transparency of the crystals and the absence of mechanical damage to the delicate needles are important. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the type locality in Michigan, USA, are by far the most desired by collectors. They are considered classic and serve as the standard for this mineral. Specimens from South Africa and Australia are also valued, but those from the USA have the greatest historical and collectible significance.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Seamanite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, compressed air can be used. Due to its chemical composition, contact with water, especially acids, is inadvisable. ## What to avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, chemical agents, detergents, and acids, which can damage or destroy delicate crystals. The mineral is sensitive to impacts and scratches due to its low hardness. It should not be exposed to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Collectible seamanite specimens are best stored in closed boxes or display cases to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Due to the fragility of the needle-like crystals, avoid placing other specimens on top of them.
