Description
## Characteristics Schachnerite is a natural amalgam of silver and mercury, belonging to the rare minerals. It forms characteristic, well-developed crystals with a hexagonal outline, most often in tabular or short prismatic forms. It also occurs as granular and dendritic aggregates. Its surface has a strong, metallic luster and a silvery-white color, which may become yellowish or brownish over time due to oxidation. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4. It is also extremely dense – its specific gravity is about 14.23 g/cm³, making it one of the heaviest minerals. It is completely opaque. It exhibits weak, indistinct cleavage and an uneven or subconchoidal fracture. ## Colors and Varieties The typical color of schachnerite is silvery-white to creamy-white. Older specimens exposed to air often develop a patina ranging from yellow to brown. No colored commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name, approved by the IMA in 1971, honors Doris Schachner (1904-1988), professor of mineralogy and director of the Institute of Mineralogy at the University of Aachen, Germany, for her contributions to the study of ore minerals. ## Uses Schachnerite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being valued for its rarity, specific chemical composition, and well-formed crystals.

It is distinguished from native silver by the presence of mercury, a slightly different hardness, and usually better-formed, hexagonal crystals. ## Crystal Forms Schachnerite crystals belong to the hexagonal system. They most often take the form of hexagonal tablets, short columns, or prisms. It also forms aggregates in the form of granular masses or picturesque, branched dendrites.
Geological environment
## Genesis Schachnerite is a hydrothermal mineral, forming at low temperatures. It forms in the oxidation zones of ore deposits rich in silver and mercury. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with native mercury, cinnabar, native silver, as well as other silver-mercury amalgams, such as moschellandsbergite and paraschachnerite. ## Localities The type locality, where this mineral was first described, is the Vertrauen-Dora mine near Landsberg (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Other known localities that yield good quality specimens include the Sala mine in Sweden and the historic mining region of Almadén in Spain.

Care and storage
## Cleaning Schachnerite specimens should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft, dry brush to remove dust. Water and any chemical agents should be avoided, as they can damage the mineral's surface or react with mercury. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to high temperatures, which can cause the release of toxic mercury vapors. Heating must be strictly avoided. It is also susceptible to acids and other chemicals. Due to its mercury content, hands should be thoroughly washed after each contact with a specimen. Prolonged exposure to light and humidity can accelerate the tarnishing process. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in stable conditions, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Due to the toxicity of mercury, the best solution is a sealed, airtight box (e.g., a "perky box"), which prevents the potential release of mercury vapors and protects the specimen from dust and mechanical damage.
