## Characteristics Sazhinite-(Ce) is a mineral from the silicate group, characterized by a complex chemical composition. It typically forms thin, tabular or platy crystals, which often arrange into rosette-like or parallel aggregates. Crystals are usually small, rarely exceeding a few millimeters. It is a transparent to translucent mineral, resembling mica in appearance due to its luster and habit. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of only 2 to 3, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It has a relatively low density, approximately 2.61 g/cm³. It exhibits a vitreous luster, which becomes pearly on perfect cleavage surfaces. It is brittle, and its fracture is uneven. ## Colors and Varieties Sazhinite-(Ce) is most commonly colorless, white, or pale yellow. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1974. Its name honors Nikolai Petrovich Sazhin (1897-1969), a Russian metallurgist and chemist who made significant contributions to the development of rare earth metal technology. The suffix "-(Ce)" in the name indicates the dominance of cerium as a rare earth element in its chemical structure, in accordance with mineral nomenclature rules. ## Uses Due to its rarity, small crystal size, and low hardness, sazhinite-(Ce) has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition in advanced systematic and regional mineral collections.

## Identification A key diagnostic feature of sazhinite-(Ce) is its perfect cleavage in three mutually perpendicular directions, causing it to break into small, rectangular fragments. Other important features include low hardness (2-3), tabular crystal habit, pearly luster on cleavage surfaces, and its specific occurrence environment in alkaline pegmatites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Sazhinite-(Ce) can be confused with some micas (e.g., muscovite) or other platy minerals due to its habit and luster. However, it is distinguished by its significantly lower hardness and characteristic three-directional cleavage, in contrast to the unidirectional cleavage of micas. ## Genesis Sazhinite-(Ce) is a mineral typical of highly alkalized igneous rocks. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in nepheline syenite pegmatites and associated hydrothermal veins. Its crystallization occurs under conditions of low temperature and high sodium activity. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a range of rare alkaline minerals. Its most common associations include aegirine, natrolite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, villiaumite, manganoneptunite, as well as other minerals from the sazhinite group. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for sazhinite-(Ce) are in Russia, in the ultra-alkaline massifs on the Kola Peninsula – in the Lovozero Massif (e.g., Alluaiw, Karnasurt, Kedykvyrpachk mountains) and in the Khibiny Massif. It is also known from one of the most famous rare mineral localities in the world – Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, Canada.
