Diagnostic features
## Identification Key diagnostic features of sassolite are its extreme softness (Mohs hardness 1), greasy or soapy feel to the touch, and pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. Its occurrence in volcanic environments (fumaroles) or as an evaporite deposit is also a strong indicator. The flame test (characteristic green color, indicating the presence of boron) is a destructive but definitive method. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Sassolite is sometimes confused with talc, which is also very soft and greasy to the touch. However, talc does not dissolve in water. It may also resemble gypsum or brucite, but both are harder than it (gypsum - 2, brucite - 2.5). It differs from mica by its much lower hardness and flexibility of flakes. ## Crystal Forms Sassolite crystals have a platy or scaly habit, with pseudohexagonal outlines. They usually form small, loosely bound aggregates, crusts, efflorescences, or earthy masses. Stalactitic forms are less common.
Geological environment
## Genesis Sassolite forms primarily as a sublimation product from hot volcanic gases and exhalations (fumaroles) at temperatures around 100°C. It also crystallizes from hot spring waters rich in boron. The second typical environment for its formation is saline lakes in desert areas, where it forms as an evaporite due to water evaporation. ## Mineral Associations In volcanic environments, sassolite often co-occurs with native sulfur, realgar, and orpiment. In evaporite deposits, it is accompanied by other borates (e.g., borax) as well as halite, gypsum, and thenardite. ## Localities The most important localities worldwide include historical sites in Italy - Tuscany (Larderello, Sasso Pisano) and Vulcano Island in the Aeolian Islands archipelago. Significant specimens also come from the geothermal areas of The Geysers in California and Steamboat Springs in Nevada (USA), the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia), Usu volcano on Hokkaido (Japan), and the Cerro Prieto geothermal field in Mexico.

## Quality Criteria The most prized by collectors are specimens with well-formed, transparent crystals in the form of pseudohexagonal plates. Rich crusts and aggregates are also highly valued. The value of a specimen significantly increases when sassolite occurs in association with contrasting minerals, such as intensely yellow native sulfur or red realgar. Due to the mineral's fragility, undamaged specimens are rare and more sought after. ## Popular Localities Specimens from Italian localities, especially from Vulcano Island, are considered classic and most desirable, as historical collections with beautiful associations with sulfur originate from there. Rich aggregates from The Geysers in California are also very popular.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Sassolite specimens should only be cleaned dry, using a very soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. Any contact with water or other liquids is unacceptable. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and high humidity must be strictly avoided, as sassolite dissolves in water. The mineral is extremely soft and brittle, so it must be protected from impacts, scratching, and crushing. High temperatures should also be avoided. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in airtight, sealed containers (e.g., "membrane boxes") or in boxes with a desiccant (silica gel) to protect them from atmospheric moisture. They should be kept away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
