Sapozhnikovite is a very rare mineral of the sodalite group, distinguished by its intense yellow color and the presence of hydrosulfide (HS²⁻) ions.

## Characteristics Sapozhnikovite is a mineral belonging to the sodalite group, being a sodium aluminosilicate with additional hydrosulfide anions. Its most characteristic feature is its intense, lemon-yellow or bright yellow color. It usually forms irregular, anhedral grains and aggregates embedded in the host rock, rarely exceeding a few millimeters in size. Well-formed crystals are not known. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of about 5.5 on the Mohs scale, which is typical for minerals of its group. It has a vitreous luster on fresh surfaces. It is transparent to translucent. Its calculated density is approximately 2.39 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Sapozhnikovite occurs exclusively in shades of yellow, from light yellow to intense lemon. No other color varieties are known. Its color is one of its main diagnostic features. ## History and Name The mineral was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2016. Its name honors Anatoliy Petrovich Sapozhnikov (born 1947), a Russian mineralogist and crystallographer from the Institute of Geochemistry in Irkutsk, for his contributions to the study of minerals of the sodalite and cancrinite groups. The type locality is the Malo-Bystrinskoe lazurite deposit near Lake Baikal in Russia. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity, sapozhnikovite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition for specialized mineral collectors.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The most important features for identifying sapozhnikovite are its bright, lemon-yellow color, vitreous luster, and specific occurrence environment. It occurs as irregular grains in lazurite metamorphic rocks, which is a key indicator. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Sapozhnikovite can be confused with other yellow sodalite-group minerals, such as vladimirivanovite or yellow haüyne. Distinguishing it from vladimirivanovite, which contains S₂²⁻ anions, is visually impossible and requires advanced chemical analysis (e.g., electron microprobe). It differs from haüyne by the absence of sulfates in its chemical composition. ## Crystal Forms Sapozhnikovite does not form well-developed crystals. It occurs exclusively as anhedral (irregular) grains and their aggregates, strongly intergrown with surrounding minerals, mainly calcite and lazurite.

Geological environment

## Genesis Sapozhnikovite is a mineral of metamorphic origin. It forms as a result of contact metasomatism processes at the interface of alkaline syenite intrusions with carbonate formations (limestones and dolomites). This process leads to the formation of rocks called lazurite metasomatites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in close association with lazurite, calcite, diopside, phlogopite, and other sodalite-group minerals, such as afghanite. ## Localities The most important and type locality for sapozhnikovite is the Malo-Bystrinskoe lazurite deposit, located in the southwestern Baikal region of Siberia (Russia). Its presence has also been confirmed in the famous Sar-e-Sang lazurite deposit in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan.

## Quality Criteria The collector's appeal of sapozhnikovite specimens primarily depends on the intensity and purity of its yellow color. Specimens in which the mineral forms larger, homogeneous aggregates, contrasting with blue lazurite or white calcite, are highly valued. The quality of the host rock and the presence of other rare associated minerals also increase the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The most prized and sought-after specimens by collectors come from the type locality - the Malo-Bystrinskoe deposit in Russia. Material from the Afghan Sar-e-Sang deposit is much rarer on the collector's market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sapozhnikovite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using only distilled water and a soft brush to remove dust and loose debris. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can cause cracks in the mineral or host rock. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids, which can damage it. Contact with household and laboratory chemicals should be strictly avoided. It should not be subjected to rapid temperature changes. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight is not recommended as a general precaution for colored minerals. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in separate, padded boxes to prevent scratching by harder minerals (e.g., quartz). It is best to display it in a closed cabinet, protecting it from dust and mechanical damage.
