## Characteristics Sangenaroite is a very rare mineral from the sulfosalt group, being a complex sulfide of silver, antimony, and arsenic. It occurs as very small, acicular or hair-like crystals, which can form tangled aggregates. Individual crystals are usually flexible. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, its visual features are difficult to observe without magnification. ## Physical Properties Sangenaroite crystals exhibit a strong, metallic luster. They are opaque. Due to their small size and rarity, properties such as hardness or density have not been precisely determined. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral has a steel-gray to black color, and on a fresh surface, it may show iridescent tarnish. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Sangenaroite was discovered in fumaroles of Mount Vesuvius in Italy. Its name comes from Saint Januarius (Italian: San Gennaro), the patron saint of Naples, a city located near the discovery site. The mineral was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2013. ## Uses Sangenaroite has no practical applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a unique and rare component of volcanic parageneses.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identifying sangenaroite under amateur conditions is practically impossible. It requires advanced analytical techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). Preliminary identification is based on finding black, metallic, acicular crystals in the specific environment of volcanic fumaroles. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with many other fine-grained sulfosalts that form under similar conditions, such as other minerals from the vrbaite group, or small stibnite crystals. Definitive differentiation is only possible based on detailed chemical and structural analysis. ## Crystal Forms Sangenaroite forms very fine, elongated, acicular or hair-like crystals, often less than 1 mm in length. These crystals can be tangled, forming aggregates resembling felt or mineral wool.

Geological environment

## Genesis Sangenaroite is a mineral of volcanic origin, formed by resublimation. It crystallizes directly from hot gases (fumaroles) at temperatures of about 250-300°C, which escape from volcanic rocks. It is a typical product of high-temperature fumarolic activity. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare sulfides and sulfosalts formed under similar conditions. At its type locality (Vesuvius), it was found in association with realgar, native sulfur, and other newly discovered sulfosalts, such as arsiccioite and vesuvianite (sulfide). ## Localities The only confirmed locality for sangenaroite in the world is its type locality – La Fossa crater on Vulcano Island, part of the Aeolian Islands archipelago in Italy.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a sangenaroite specimen is primarily assessed based on the richness and quantity of crystals on the rock matrix. Since the crystals are microscopic, samples with dense, well-visible under magnification aggregates of acicular crystals are most valued. The aesthetics of the matrix and the presence of contrasting associated minerals, e.g., red realgar, are also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of sangenaroite specimens is the La Fossa crater on Vulcano Island, Italy. Collecting material at this location is strictly regulated and dangerous, making specimens extremely difficult to acquire.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its extreme delicacy and reactivity, mechanical or chemical cleaning is absolutely inadvisable. Specimens should be left in their untouched state. ## What to Avoid Avoid any contact with water, chemicals, as well as sudden changes in temperature and humidity. The mineral is sensitive to oxidation and may decompose under atmospheric conditions. It should be protected from light, which can accelerate degradation processes. ## Storage Sangenaroite specimens must be stored in stable, airtight conditions. The best solution is a sealed container (such as a "perky box") or capsule, placed in a dry and dark place. Vibrations and shocks should be avoided.
