Saltonseaite is an extremely rare potassium, sodium, and manganese halide, discovered as microscopic grains in geothermal boreholes.

## Characteristics Saltonseaite is a complex halide that forms exclusively microscopic, anhedral (irregular) grains not exceeding 200 micrometers in size. It typically occurs as colorless or pale pink, often intergrown with other salts. Due to its size and mode of occurrence, it is a mineral impossible to identify without advanced analytical equipment. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a vitreous luster and is transparent. Its density, calculated based on chemical composition and crystal structure, is 2.53 g/cm³. Hardness has not been determined due to the small size of the grains, which prevents standard testing. ## Colors and Varieties Observed colors are colorless and pale pink. No varieties of this mineral are known. ## History and Name Saltonseaite was first described in 2008 by Jeffrey B. Hulen and his team. The name comes from the discovery locality – the Salton Sea geothermal field in Imperial County, California, USA. The mineral was identified in drill cores from depths of several hundred meters, where it crystallized from hot, supersaturated brine. ## Applications Saltonseaite has no commercial or industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific, as an indicator of specific geochemical conditions prevailing in geothermal systems.

## Identification Amateur identification of saltonseaite is impossible. Recognition requires specialized analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS), which allow determination of its crystal structure and chemical composition. A key clue is its unique occurrence environment – deposits from hypersaline geothermal brines. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other co-occurring halides, such as halite, sylvite, or rinneite, with which it forms close intergrowths. Visual distinction of these minerals based on the appearance of microscopic grains is infeasible and requires laboratory analysis. ## Crystal Forms This mineral occurs exclusively in the form of anhedral, irregular grains. No well-formed crystals have been observed to date.

Geological environment

## Genesis Saltonseaite crystallizes directly from hot (approx. 100–105°C), metal-bearing, and extremely saline solutions (brines) in geothermal systems. Its formation is associated with a decrease in brine temperature and the precipitation of excess dissolved salts as it flows through lower-temperature zones. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in close association with other salts, primarily halite, sylvite, and rinneite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of saltonseaite in the world is the Salton Sea geothermal field in California, USA, from which its holotype originates.

## Quality Criteria The quality of saltonseaite specimens is not assessed in the traditional way (color, clarity, form). Its collector's value, purely scientific, lies in the mere fact of possessing an analytically confirmed micro-fragment of this mineral, preferably in association with other rare salts from the type locality. It is a mineral exclusively for specialized micromineral collectors. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality in California, which is not accessible for public collecting. The material comes from scientific research conducted on drill cores and is mainly available in institutional collections.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its probable water solubility, the mineral should not be wet cleaned. Any contaminants should only be removed dry, using a very soft brush or a stream of compressed air with extreme caution. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, alcohol, and other solvents must be strictly avoided. As a salt mineral, it is likely hygroscopic, so it must be protected from atmospheric moisture, which can lead to its degradation. ## Storage Saltonseaite specimens must be stored in airtight, dry containers, preferably with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). The standard is storage in micromount boxes, which isolate the sample from the environment.
