Sabinaite is a rare carbonate mineral, forming small, pearly-white crystals and aggregates, discovered in Canada.

## Characteristics Sabinaite is a complex carbonate of sodium, zirconium, and titanium. It typically occurs as very small, bladed or tabular crystals, rarely exceeding 1 mm in length. These crystals often form rosette-like or spherulitic (spherical) aggregates. The mineral is characterized by a pearly or dull luster and is usually white or colorless. ## Physical Properties Sabinaite is a relatively soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 4. It has a density of approximately 3.36 g/cm³. Crystals exhibit perfect cleavage in one direction, which is visible on their surfaces. The luster on cleavage surfaces is distinctly pearly, while on other surfaces it may be dull or earthy. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is typically white, creamy white, or colorless. No named color varieties or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Sabinaite was discovered in the Francon Quarry in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) and described in 1980 by a team of mineralogists: J.L. Jambor, B.D. Sturman, and G.C. Weatherly. The mineral is named in honor of Ann P. Sabina (b. 1930), a mineralogist with the Geological Survey of Canada, in recognition of her contributions to the study of Canadian minerals, including those from the Francon Quarry. ## Uses Due to its rarity and small crystal size, sabinaite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals or minerals from specific localities (so-called "micromounts").

## Identification Sabinaite is identified by its characteristic, small, white or colorless crystals forming rosette-like aggregates. A key feature is its occurrence in a specific geological environment – in vugs within a dawsonite-siderite sill. The pearly luster on cleavage surfaces is also helpful in identification. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Sabinaite can be confused with other white secondary minerals occurring in the same association, such as dawsonite or weloganite. It is distinguished by its crystal habit (bladed, in rosettes) and perfect cleavage. However, definitive confirmation requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Sabinaite crystals are monoclinic and have the form of thin, flattened blades or tablets. They most often occur as radial, rosette-like, or spherical aggregates, which rarely reach several millimeters in diameter.

Geological environment

## Genesis Sabinaite is a secondary mineral, formed under low-temperature hydrothermal conditions. In its type locality (Francon Quarry), it crystallized in vugs and fractures within an altered alkaline sill (magmatic intrusion). ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a rich assemblage of other rare minerals. In the Francon Quarry, it was found in association with weloganite, dawsonite, quartz, siderite, ankerite, cryolite, as well as rarer species like dresserite and strontiodresserite. ## Localities The most important and best-known occurrence of sabinaite in the world is its type locality – the now-inactive Francon Quarry in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This is the source of the best-known specimens of this mineral. Outside of Canada, its presence has also been reported in the Pilanesberg alkaline complex in the Republic of South Africa.

## Quality Criteria The quality of sabinaite specimens is primarily assessed based on the size and development of crystal aggregates. The most prized specimens are those with well-defined, sharp rosettes or spherical clusters, clearly contrasting with the host rock (matrix). Color contrast with associated minerals, such as yellow weloganite, also enhances the specimen's attractiveness. Due to the microscopic size of its crystals, sabinaite is a classic mineral for "micromount" collections. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector-grade specimens is the Francon Quarry in Montreal (Canada). As the quarry has long been inactive and inaccessible, specimens come exclusively from old collections, which limits their availability on the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Sabinaite specimens should be cleaned with the utmost care, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its reactivity with acids, all chemical cleaning agents should be avoided. If liquid is necessary, distilled water or pure isopropyl alcohol, applied in very small amounts, is recommended. ## What to Avoid Sabinaite is sensitive to acids – even weak acids can damage or destroy it. Ultrasonic cleaners, which can destroy delicate crystal aggregates, should be avoided. The mineral should be protected from moisture and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage The best way to store sabinaite is to place it in a sealed, padded "micromount" box, which protects delicate crystals from mechanical damage and dust. It should be stored in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.
