## Characteristics Ruizite is a hydrated calcium manganese silicate, prized by collectors for its vibrant, orange-red color. It typically occurs in radial or spherulitic aggregates, composed of very fine, acicular or hair-like crystals. Less commonly, it forms small, prismatic crystals with a bladed habit. Due to the small size of the crystals, its features are often observed at a microscopic scale. ## Physical Properties Ruizite crystals are relatively soft, with a hardness of approximately 5 on the Mohs scale. They exhibit a vitreous luster and are transparent to translucent. The mineral's density is about 3.29 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is monochromatic and does not form varieties. Its characteristic color ranges from orange to reddish-orange. ## History and Name Ruizite was first described in 1977 by Sidney A. Williams and Marjorie Duggan. The mineral is named in honor of Joaquin Ruiz (1898–1976), a Mexican mineralogist and professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in recognition of his contributions to the study of Mexican mineral deposits. ## Uses Ruizite has no industrial applications. It is solely a mineral of scientific and collector interest.

## Identification Ruizite is relatively easy to identify based on its intense, orange-red color and characteristic occurrence as radial or spherical aggregates of fine needles. It often forms crusts on other minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other orange manganese silicates, such as inesite or pyroxmangite, but differs from them in crystal habit. Inesite usually forms larger, bladed crystals, and pyroxmangite is harder and has a different habit. Final differentiation often requires advanced analytical methods. ## Crystal Forms Ruizite crystals are monoclinic, with a prismatic habit, often elongated and acicular. They typically form radial, stellate, or spherulitic (spherical) aggregates. Single, well-formed crystals are rare.

Geological environment

## Genesis Ruizite is a secondary mineral, formed by hydrothermal processes in veins and fractures cutting through volcanic andesite and rhyolite rocks. It forms in the oxidation zones of manganese deposits. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other manganese minerals and silicates. The most common associated minerals include: apophyllite, calcite, quartz, orientite, pyroxmangite, inesite, and also manganese oxides. ## Localities The most important and classic locality (localitas typica), from which the best specimens originate, is the Christmas Mine in Gila County, Arizona, USA. This mineral has also been found in the Wessels Mine in Hotazel, in the Kalahari Manganese Field in the Republic of South Africa, and in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.

## Quality Criteria The most prized specimens by collectors are those from the Christmas Mine in Arizona. An ideal specimen should feature an intense, vivid orange-red color. Well-formed, radial aggregates with a silky luster, contrasting with a light matrix, are highly valued. The size of the aggregates and the absence of damage to the delicate needles also significantly increase the specimen's collector value. ## Popular Localities By far the most desirable and well-known source of ruizite is the Christmas Mine in Arizona, USA. Specimens from this locality are considered exemplary for this species. Less common, but also valued, are specimens from the Wessels Mine in South Africa.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Ruizite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its delicate nature and often small crystal size, ultrasonic cleaners and mechanical cleaning should be avoided. If liquid is necessary, distilled water is recommended. ## What to Avoid Contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals that can damage the mineral should be avoided. Ruizite is sensitive to high temperatures, which can lead to dehydration and structural changes. It should be protected from impacts and scratching. ## Storage Ruizite specimens, especially those with delicate, acicular crystals, are best stored in "micromount" boxes or display cases to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Exposure to direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations should be avoided.
