Roterbäryt is an extremely rare copper, palladium, and bismuth selenide, known exclusively from one locality in Germany.
Description
## Characteristics Roterbäryt is a mineral with a metallic luster and a gray color. It forms very small, bladed crystals, not exceeding 0.2 mm in length. It usually occurs as microscopic intergrowths with other visually similar selenides, making its identification impossible without specialized equipment. It is an opaque mineral. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a strong metallic luster. Its density, calculated based on its chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is 7.63 g/cm³. Hardness, cleavage, and fracture have not yet been determined due to the small size of the crystals. ## Colors and Varieties Roterbäryt is monochromatic – it occurs exclusively in shades of gray. No color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery location – the historic Roter Bär mine in Sankt Andreasberg (Harz Mountains, Germany), which is its only known locality (type locality). It was officially described as a new mineral species in 2017 by a research team led by C.J. Stanley. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, roterbäryt has no commercial or industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and it is an object of interest for specialized collectors of microscopic minerals.

## Identification Identification of roterbäryt is impossible with the naked eye and requires advanced analytical techniques. Due to its microscopic size and intergrowth with other minerals, the only reliable method is chemical composition analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS), which confirms the presence of copper, palladium, bismuth, and selenium. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals This mineral can be confused with many other selenides of gray color and metallic luster with which it coexists, such as clausthalite, wittichenite, bohdanowiczite, or permingeatite. Differentiation is based solely on precise chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Roterbäryt forms elongated, bladed crystals, reaching a maximum of 0.2 mm in length. They usually occur as irregular aggregates and intergrowths with other minerals of selenide mineralization.
Geological environment
## Genesis Roterbäryt forms through low-temperature hydrothermal processes. It is a component of calcite-quartz veins cutting through sedimentary rocks that have undergone metamorphism. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare selenides. It is most often accompanied by clausthalite, wittichenite, bohdanowiczite, permingeatite, tiemannite, umangite, klockmannite, and native bismuth. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of roterbäryt in the world is its type locality – the Roter Bär mine in Sankt Andreasberg, in the Harz Mountains, Lower Saxony, Germany.

## Quality Criteria For such a rare mineral, the only criterion of value is the confirmation of its presence on the rock matrix using analytical methods. Specimens are microscopic, so features such as color, luster, or crystal form are not subject to aesthetic evaluation in the traditional sense. The value of a specimen increases if the crystals are relatively well-separated from other mineral phases. ## Popular Localities The only source of roterbäryt specimens is its type locality in Germany (Roter Bär mine). Material from this location is extremely difficult to obtain.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Roterbäryt specimens should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. The only permissible action is careful dust removal using compressed air from a safe distance. Any other form of cleaning risks irreversible damage or loss of the microscopic crystals. ## What to Avoid Contact with any chemicals, acids, detergents, and water should be strictly avoided. Ultrasonic cleaners must not be used. The mineral should be protected from high temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight. ## Storage Specimens containing roterbäryt should be stored under stable conditions in a dry environment. The best solution is to place them in a tightly sealed "micromount" box, which protects against dust, mechanical damage, and changes in humidity.
