Romarchite is a rare tin(II) oxide, occurring as a black, powdery coating on tin artifacts from underwater archaeological sites.

## Characteristics Romarchite is a tin(II) oxide and a rare secondary mineral. It almost never forms macroscopic crystals, most often appearing as black, dull, sooty, or powdery coatings and crusts. Its aggregates can be microcrystalline or earthy. Due to its genesis and appearance, it is not a visually striking mineral in the classic sense, and its significance is primarily scientific. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2. It is opaque and relatively heavy, with a calculated density of about 6.95 g/cm³. The luster is described as submetallic, dull, or earthy, depending on the nature of the aggregate. ## Colors and Varieties Romarchite has a uniform black or grayish-black color. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the acronym of the institution that studied it – the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) – and from the field with which it is associated – archaeology. It was first identified and described in 1981 by J.D. Grice and G.C. Gasparrini. The discovery was made on tin vessels recovered from the wreck of the British merchant ship "General Carleton," which sank in 1785 off the coast of Poland. ## Uses Romarchite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest, mainly in the fields of mineralogy, conservation chemistry, and underwater archaeology, as an indicator of metal corrosion processes in aquatic environments.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Its characteristic feature is its occurrence: a black, sooty, or powdery coating on the surface of artifacts made of tin or its alloys (e.g., pewter), originating from archaeological sites, mainly underwater. It is very soft and has a black streak. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other black corrosion products or manganese oxides. From cassiterite (SnOâ‚‚), which is also a tin oxide, it is distinguished primarily by its extremely low hardness (cassiterite has a hardness of 6-7) and different formation conditions. Certain identification is almost exclusively possible using analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Romarchite does not form crystals visible to the naked eye. It occurs as microcrystalline, earthy, powdery, or fuliginous (sooty) aggregates and coatings.

Geological environment

## Genesis It is a secondary mineral, formed under specific conditions. It forms as a result of slow corrosion (oxidation) of metallic tin or its alloys in an aquatic environment with low oxygen content. Its formation is associated with human activity, therefore it is sometimes classified as an anthropogenic mineral. ## Mineral Associations It most often co-occurs with hydroromarchite (another tin corrosion product), cassiterite, and remnants of native metallic tin. ## Localities The type locality is the wreck of the ship "General Carleton," resting in the Baltic Sea near Dębki (Polish coast). It is also found on tin artifacts from other shipwrecks worldwide, for example, in the North American Great Lakes.

## Quality Criteria Romarchite is not a mineral acquired for its aesthetic value. In scientific and museum collections, the historical and documentary value of the specimen – i.e., the artifact on which it occurs – is most important. The quality of the specimen is determined by the certainty of mineral identification and the state of preservation and historical context of the object itself. ## Market Prices This mineral is not traded on the collector's market. Specimens are found almost exclusively in institutional and research collections. ## Popular Localities The only "localities" for this mineral are archaeological sites, mainly shipwrecks containing tin objects. There are no mines or places from which it can be extracted in a manner typical of other minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Romarchite specimens are extremely delicate and susceptible to mechanical damage. Cleaning is not recommended. Any attempts to use brushes, water, or chemicals will irreversibly destroy or remove the mineral layer from the substrate. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and chemicals, as well as changes in humidity and temperature, should be strictly avoided. Specimens are sensitive to vibrations and all forms of abrasion. As a corrosion product, the mineral can be unstable in variable environmental conditions. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in a stable, dry environment, preferably in a sealed, padded "micromount" box, to minimize the risk of vibrations and physical contact. Display should only occur in sealed display cases with controlled atmospheres.
