Rhodium (Rh) is an extremely rare mineral from the native elements group, distinguished by its silvery-white color, metallic luster, and very high density.
Description
## Characteristics Native rhodium is an element from the platinum-group metals (PGM) that occurs in nature in its free state. It is one of the rarest and most valuable minerals on Earth. It forms small, irregular grains, flakes, or rounded nuggets in alluvial deposits. Poorly formed cubic crystals are rarely observed. It usually occurs as a natural alloy with platinum and other platinum-group metals, and pure native rhodium is a mineralogical rarity. ## Physical Properties It is characterized by a strong, metallic luster and is completely opaque. Its Mohs hardness is about 5.5-6, making it a hard and scratch-resistant metal. It is malleable and ductile. One of its most distinguishing features is its very high density, reaching 12.44 g/cm³, which makes even small specimens surprisingly heavy. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral has a characteristic silvery-white or steel-gray color that does not tarnish or oxidize upon contact with air. It does not form colored varieties. However, it occurs in the form of natural alloys, the most important of which is rhodoplatinum (platinum with an admixture of rhodium), formally a variety of platinum. ## History and Name Rhodium as an element was discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston, who isolated it from crude platinum ore from South America. The name comes from the Greek word "rhodon" (ῥόδον), meaning "rose," and refers to the intensely pink color of solutions of its chloride salts, which Wollaston observed during his research. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity, native rhodium has no industrial application—it is solely an object of collector and scientific interest. Industrially obtained rhodium (as a byproduct of platinum and nickel mining), however, is a key metal in the production of automotive catalysts, in the chemical and electronic industries, and as an electroplated coating in jewelry.

## Identification Identifying native rhodium in the field is practically impossible without specialized equipment. In a collection, it can be recognized by its silvery-white color, very high density, hardness, and metallic luster. Its occurrence is limited to ultramafic rocks and associated alluvium, in association with other platinum-group metals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Native rhodium is visually indistinguishable from native platinum, native palladium, and other white platinum-group metals. Definitive differentiation requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS). It is distinguished from the much more common native silver by its significantly greater hardness and resistance to tarnishing. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are extremely rare and usually appear as poorly formed, small cubes. Most often, it is found in the form of irregular grains, granular aggregates, flakes, or rounded nuggets (placer gold) transported by rivers.
Geological environment
## Genesis Native rhodium crystallizes as a primary mineral during magmatic processes in ultramafic rocks, such as dunites and peridotites, often within chromitite deposits. As these rocks weather, it is released and can concentrate in secondary (placer) deposits in river and alluvial sediments, due to its high density and chemical resistance. ## Mineral Associations It always occurs in association with other platinum-group minerals, such as platinum, iridium, osmium, palladium, and ruthenium. It also co-occurs with chromite, magnetite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. ## Localities As a mineral, it is found in the same locations as other platinum-group metals. Major mining areas include the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa, the Norilsk region in Russia, and the Sudbury Basin in Canada. Confirmed occurrences of native rhodium (as mineralogical rarities) come from Colombia (Chocó department), USA (Oregon), Canada (British Columbia), and from ultramafic massifs on Borneo.

## Quality Criteria Every documented and natural specimen of native rhodium is by definition a world-class specimen. The most highly valued are rare, visible to the naked eye, well-formed crystals or larger grains, especially if they are embedded in the host rock (matrix). Due to the microscopic size of most occurrences, size is a key factor influencing value. ## Market Prices Natural specimens of native rhodium practically do not appear on the open collector's market. Their value is extremely high and many times exceeds the price of the metal itself on the stock exchange. Any valuation is always individual and depends on the size, quality, and provenance of the specimen. ## Popular Localities Specimens of scientific and collecting importance mainly come from historical placer deposits in Colombia and from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa. Special caution should be exercised, as synthetic rhodium crystals or industrial specimens, which are not natural minerals, are sometimes offered on the market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Rhodium is a noble metal, exceptionally chemically resistant. Distilled water and a soft brush are sufficient for cleaning. Ultrasonic cleaners can be safely used, provided the specimen is a solid grain and not on a fragile matrix. ## What to Avoid The mineral is resistant to most acids (including aqua regia at room temperature), bases, and atmospheric agents. It does not require protection from sunlight, humidity, or temperature changes. It is one of the most stable and durable minerals. ## Storage Specimens of native rhodium are usually very small and extremely valuable, so it is recommended to store them in a safe place, preferably in a sealed "micromount" box, to prevent loss. There are no special requirements for storage conditions.
