Pyrophyllite

Pyrophyllite is a soft, platy aluminum silicate that swells and exfoliates into flakes when heated.

## Characteristics Pyrophyllite is a mineral belonging to the layered silicate group, closely related to talc. Its name, derived from Greek, perfectly reflects its unique property – when exposed to fire (Gr. *pyr*), it swells and separates into small leaves (Gr. *phyllon*). It usually forms platy, scaly, or fibrous aggregates, less commonly compact and dense masses. Individual lamellae are flexible but inelastic. It feels greasy and soapy to the touch, a characteristic shared with talc. ## Physical Properties It is one of the softest minerals, with a hardness of only 1-2 on the Mohs scale, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It has a low density, approximately 2.65-2.90 g/cm³. The luster on fracture surfaces is usually pearly or dull, and the mineral itself is translucent to opaque. ## Colors and Varieties It most commonly occurs in shades of white, gray, yellow, or green. It can also be colorless, and sometimes, due to impurities, it takes on a brownish hue. Some compact, aluminum-rich varieties of particular artistic and craft significance, such as agalmatolite, are used to create sculptures and ornaments, especially in Asia. ## History and Name The name pyrophyllite was introduced by the German chemist and mineralogist R. Hermann in 1829. It refers to the characteristic behavior of the mineral when heated. The first described specimens came from the vicinity of Berezovsk in the Urals, Russia. ## Applications Due to its softness, high-temperature resistance, and chemical inertness, pyrophyllite is used in the ceramic industry, as a filler in paper, rubber, and paint production, and as a carrier for pesticides. Compact varieties, known as "pencil stone" or agalmatolite, have been used for centuries in China and Korea to make seals, figurines, and decorative objects.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Pyrophyllite is most easily identified by its extreme softness (it can be scratched with a fingernail) and its characteristic soapy or greasy feel. Its lamellae are flexible, but unlike micas, they are not elastic. The pearly luster on cleavage planes is also an important feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It is most often confused with talc, which has very similar hardness and is also greasy to the touch. Distinguishing them without specialized tests (e.g., chemical or X-ray analysis) is extremely difficult. Pyrophyllite can be distinguished from micas (e.g., muscovite) by the fact that its lamellae do not return to their original shape after bending (lack of elasticity). ## Crystal Forms Pyrophyllite rarely forms well-developed, tabular crystals. It usually occurs as radial or fan-shaped aggregates, as well as in platy, scaly, fibrous aggregates, or in compact, earthy masses.

Geological environment

## Genesis Pyrophyllite is a typical metamorphic mineral. It forms under conditions of low-grade metamorphism, in aluminum-rich sedimentary rocks such as clay shales and siltstones. It can also form as a result of hydrothermal processes, in alteration zones of volcanic rocks, especially acidic ones (rhyolites, tuffs). ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with minerals such as quartz, muscovite, sericite, kaolinite, andalusite, kyanite, topaz, lazulite, diaspore, and rutile. ## Localities Significant pyrophyllite deposits are found in the United States (North Carolina, California), Brazil (Minas Gerais), Russia (Urals), Switzerland, South Korea, and Japan. In Poland, small occurrences have been noted in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.

## Quality Criteria For collectors, the most desirable specimens are those forming well-developed, radial or fan-shaped aggregates with intense color (e.g., yellowish, greenish) and a distinct pearly luster. Specimens from classic, historical localities are also valuable. Compact, carved varieties (agalmatolite) constitute a separate category and are prized for their craftsmanship and the aesthetic qualities of the material. ## Popular Localities Among the most valued localities by collectors are those in North Carolina (USA), especially from the Hillsborough area, which yield classic, radial aggregates. Specimens from Brazil (e.g., from the Diamantina mine in Minas Gerais) are also highly prized.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Pyrophyllite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its extreme softness, all scrubbing should be avoided. If water is necessary, it should be distilled water, and the specimen should then be thoroughly air-dried, without heating. ## What to Avoid The mineral is very soft and susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. Contact with harder minerals should be avoided. It is sensitive to strong acids. It should not be heated, as this can cause irreversible damage and disintegration. ## Storage Pyrophyllite specimens are best stored separately in padded boxes to prevent scratches and abrasions. They should not be displayed in places where they might be exposed to impacts or contact with other objects.
