Pseudosinhalite is an extremely rare, colorless or pale yellow magnesium aluminum borate, found in skarns in Sri Lanka.

Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of pseudosinhalite is extremely difficult and impossible without advanced laboratory methods, such as chemical analysis (electron microprobe) and crystallographic studies (X-ray diffraction). Visually, it is practically indistinguishable from sinhalite, to which it is closely related. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals The most similar mineral is sinhalite, which has very similar physical and optical properties. Pseudosinhalite differs from it subtly in chemical composition (it contains a hydroxyl group (OH) and has a different aluminum to boron ratio) and crystallizes in a different crystallographic system (monoclinic, while sinhalite is orthorhombic). ## Crystal Forms Pseudosinhalite crystals are most often tabular, with a hexagonal outline, and do not exceed 2 mm. They occur as single crystals or inclusions in sinhalite.
Geological environment
## Genesis Pseudosinhalite forms under conditions of high-grade contact metamorphism. It crystallizes in magnesian skarns, which formed at the contact of granitic or syenitic intrusions with sedimentary rocks rich in magnesium and boron. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in close association with sinhalite, in which it often forms inclusions. Other accompanying minerals at the type locality include spinel, geikielite, phlogopite, graphite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for pseudosinhalite in the world is its type locality in the Ratnapura district, near Embilipitiya in Sri Lanka. It was found there in skarns associated with gemstone mining.

## Quality Criteria As a mineral of primarily scientific importance, every analytically confirmed specimen is extremely valuable. Collector value is determined by the confirmation of the specimen's authenticity, and secondarily by the size and quality of the crystals, although these are always microscopic. The most desirable are idiomorphic, well-formed crystals, even if they are less than a millimeter in size. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is Sri Lanka, and the material is extremely difficult to obtain. Specimens practically do not appear on the commercial market and are mainly found in institutional and university collections.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity and typically small size of specimens, mechanical cleaning is not recommended. If absolutely necessary, compressed air can be used to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, chemical agents, acids, and sudden temperature changes. The mineral is stable, but as a unique research material, it should be handled with utmost care. ## Storage Pseudosinhalite specimens, typically in the form of microscopic inclusions or small crystals, should be stored under stable conditions in specialized "micromount" boxes. They should be protected from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage.
