## Characteristics Prosopite is a hydrated calcium aluminum fluoride, belonging to the halide group. It most often forms spherical or hemispherical aggregates with an internal radial structure, as well as granular and massive occurrences. Well-formed crystals are rare, usually small, and have a tabular or short-prismatic habit. The mineral is characterized by a vitreous luster, sometimes dull on fracture surfaces. ## Physical Properties Its Mohs hardness is 4.5, making it a relatively soft mineral, susceptible to scratching by harder materials. The density is approximately 2.88 g/cm³. It is brittle and exhibits perfect cleavage in one plane. The fracture is most often conchoidal. ## Colors and Varieties Prosopite occurs in various colors. It is most often colorless, white, or gray. Rarer specimens are pale green, light blue, or even purple. Some specimens from Mexico, valued by collectors, are distinguished by their intense blue or purple coloration. No named varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Greek word "prosopon" (πρόσωπον), meaning "mask." This refers to the frequent occurrence of prosopite in the form of pseudomorphs, i.e., secondary crystals adopting the external form of another mineral. It was first described in 1853 by Karl Johann August Scheerer based on specimens found in the tin mine in Altenberg, Saxony (Germany). ## Uses Prosopite has no significant industrial application. However, it is a mineral valued and sought after by collectors, especially its colorful, well-formed specimens.

Classic specimens from historical localities in Germany and the USA are also of great importance to specialized collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Prosopite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Due to its moderate hardness, harder brushes can scratch it. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage brittle crystals or aggregates. ## What to Avoid The mineral is susceptible to mechanical damage, so it should be protected from impacts and contact with harder minerals (e.g., quartz, topaz). Contact with strong acids and other aggressive chemicals should be avoided. Although stable, it is not recommended to expose it to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Collector's specimens of prosopite are best stored in separate, padded boxes to prevent abrasion and scratching. It can be displayed in closed display cases, protecting it from dust and potential mechanical damage.
