Preisingerite is a rare bismuth arsenate, forming small, platy crystals of white or colorless hue with a pearly luster.

## Characteristics Preisingerite is a rare mineral from the arsenate group, chemically a basic bismuth arsenate. It occurs as very small, platy or bladed crystals, which rarely exceed 1 mm in length. These crystals often form rosette-like or radial aggregates, as well as thin coatings and crusts on host rocks. Due to the small size of the crystals, its macroscopic features are difficult to observe without magnification. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness ranging from 3-4 on the Mohs scale. It has a pearly luster, particularly visible on cleavage planes, and a white streak. It is a relatively dense mineral, which is typical for bismuth compounds – its density is approximately 6.85 g/cm³. Crystals are usually translucent. ## Colors and Varieties Preisingerite is most commonly colorless to white, sometimes with a pale yellow or grayish tint. No colored or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in the Güldener Falk mine in Schneeberg (Saxony, Germany) and described in 1981 by Kurt Walenta. The name honors Anton Preisinger (1925-2017), a professor of crystallography at the University of Vienna, in recognition of his contributions to the study of arsenates. ## Uses Preisingerite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a rare and well-defined mineral species.

## Identification Preisingerite is difficult to identify without specialized tests. Preliminary identification is based on its typical mode of occurrence – small, platy crystals forming rosette-like aggregates. Its pearly luster, high density (the specimen feels heavy for its size), and co-occurrence with other bismuth minerals and arsenates are also characteristic. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other secondary bismuth minerals, such as atelestite, walentaite, or eulytine, as well as with mica (muscovite) due to its pearly luster and habit. Definitive distinction requires chemical analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm its composition and structure. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are very small, with a platy or bladed habit, often flattened. They typically form radial or rosette-like aggregates, as well as thin coatings on rock surfaces.

Geological environment

## Genesis Preisingerite is a secondary mineral formed in the oxidation zones (weathering) of hydrothermal ore deposits rich in bismuth and arsenic. It forms as a result of the alteration of primary bismuth sulfides and arsenides under the influence of oxygen-rich waters. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with quartz, native bismuth, bismuthinite, arsenopyrite, as well as other rare bismuth arsenates such as atelestite, walentaite, eulytine, pucherite, and schumacherite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality (type locality) is the Güldener Falk mine in the Schneeberg district in Saxony (Germany). This mineral has also been confirmed in several other localities worldwide, including mines in the Wittichen area in the Black Forest (Germany) and in Jáchymov (Czech Republic).

## Quality Criteria Specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic, rosette-like aggregates are most valued by collectors. Contrast with the rock matrix and absence of damage are important. Due to the microscopic nature of the mineral, the quality of microphotographs documenting the specimen is crucial. The presence of rare associated minerals also increases the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities By far the most sought-after and classic specimens come from the type locality – Schneeberg, Germany. Material from other confirmed localities is also valued by specialists and systematic mineral collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Preisingerite specimens should be cleaned with the utmost care, exclusively using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its low hardness and perfect cleavage, mechanical and ultrasonic cleaning should be avoided. The use of water is not recommended. ## What to Avoid Contact with all chemicals, especially acids, which can damage it, should be avoided. The mineral is brittle and sensitive to shocks and scratches. It should be protected from moisture and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Preisingerite specimens, due to their small size and fragility, are best stored in closed "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust, mechanical damage, and direct contact.
