Poudretteite is an extremely rare cyclosilicate mineral, known for its few pale pink and colorless crystals of collector's value.
Description
## Characteristics Poudretteite is an exceptionally rare, complex potassium and sodium borosilicate. It belongs to minerals of exceptional collector's value, and its gemological specimens are among the most expensive gemstones in the world. It typically forms hexagonal, prismatic crystals, often with a characteristic barrel shape. Its occurrence is limited to only a few localities on Earth. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft and susceptible to scratching. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. Its density is approximately 2.51-2.53 g/cm³, so it is relatively light. ## Colors and Varieties Poudretteite is most often colorless or occurs in shades from pale pink to purplish pink. The intensity of the color is one of the key factors influencing its value. No named varieties are distinguished, as the mineral itself is so rare that each specimen is treated individually. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in the 1960s at the Poudrette quarry on Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, Canada. However, it was formally described and recognized as a new mineral species only in 1987 by Joel D. Grice and his team. The name comes from the Poudrette family, who managed the quarry where the discovery was made for many years. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and relatively low hardness, poudretteite has no industrial applications. Its only purpose is the collector's market and niche, high-end jewelry. Faceted stones are extremely valuable and sought after by connoisseurs.
Diagnostic features
## Identification Characteristic features of poudretteite include its hexagonal, barrel-shaped crystals, low hardness (5 on the Mohs scale), and specific pale pink color. Occurrence in known localities (Mont Saint-Hilaire, Mogok) is also a strong diagnostic indicator. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals It can be confused with pale pink beryl (morganite), spodumene (kunzite), or rose quartz. It is distinguished by its lower hardness (5) from beryl (7.5-8) and quartz (7) and a different crystal structure. Kunzite (hardness 6.5-7) has excellent cleavage in two directions, which poudretteite does not exhibit to such a distinct degree. ## Crystal forms It forms hexagonal, prismatic crystals, often barrel-shaped due to convergent prism faces. It usually occurs as single, well-formed crystals, less often in small aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis It forms under very specific geological conditions. In the type locality (Mont Saint-Hilaire), it occurs in marble xenoliths (fragments of carbonate rocks absorbed by magma) within an alkaline nepheline syenite intrusion. In Burma (Mogok), its genesis is probably related to metamorphic processes within boron-rich marbles. ## Mineral associations At Mont Saint-Hilaire, it coexists with pectolite, aegirine, microcline, sodalite, and catapleiite. In Mogok, it is accompanied by minerals typical of the skarn zones and pegmatites there, such as spinel, corundum, and tourmaline. ## Localities The most important locality is the Poudrette quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada. This is the type locality. The second, extremely important due to the gemological quality of the material, is the Mogok region in Burma (Myanmar). The largest and purest known crystals and faceted stones come from Mogok.

## Quality criteria The most highly valued are transparent crystals with the most intense possible pink or purplish-pink coloration. The size of the crystal is also crucial – specimens over 1 cm are exceptionally rare – as well as the absence of inclusions and damage. Well-formed, barrel-shaped crystals are more desirable than irregular fragments. ## Popular localities The most sought-after specimens come from two places: classic, though usually smaller crystals from Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada, and larger, gem-quality crystals from Mogok in Burma, which fetch very high prices on the collector's market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning It should be cleaned only with lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap, using a very soft brush. After washing, the specimen should be thoroughly rinsed with distilled water and left to air dry or gently blotted with a soft cloth. ## What to avoid Poudretteite is relatively soft (hardness 5 on the Mohs scale), so it is susceptible to scratching. Avoid contact with harder minerals. It is sensitive to high temperatures and thermal shock. Ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners must not be used. Avoid contact with strong acids and bases. ## Storage Specimens should be stored separately in a padded display box to avoid abrasion and scratching. It should be protected from dust and sudden changes in temperature.
