Pošepnýite is an extremely rare antimony, copper, and mercury selenide, forming tiny, black crystals with a metallic luster.

## Characteristics Pošepnýite is a very rare mineral from the sulfosalt group, specifically a complex selenide of antimony, copper, and mercury. It occurs as very fine, tabular or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. It also forms flakes and aggregates. Its crystals are black, opaque, and have a metallic luster. Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, it is a mineral of purely scientific and collecting interest. ## Physical Properties Pošepnýite crystals are flexible and can be bent. The luster is metallic, and the streak is black. Hardness and density have not been precisely measured due to the size and rarity of samples. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral is uniform and occurs exclusively in black. No varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of František Pošepný (1836–1895), a Czech geologist who made significant contributions to the theory of ore deposit formation. Pošepnýite was approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2017. It was discovered in the historical dump of the Předbořice mine in the Czech Republic. ## Uses Pošepnýite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and for advanced collectors specializing in rare minerals or sulfosalt minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of pošepnýite is possible only through advanced laboratory methods, such as energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) in conjunction with electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Visually, on a micro scale, one can observe black, metallic-lustered crystals with a tabular or bladed habit. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other black, metallic sulfosalts or selenides found in the same environment, such as hakite, permingeatite, or petrovicite. Definitive differentiation requires chemical composition analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, thin, tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline, as well as bladed and flaky forms. It occurs as single crystals or small clusters on the surface of the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Pošepnýite forms as a result of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. In its type locality (Předbořice), it occurs in calcite-dolomite veins cutting black shales from the Neoproterozoic period. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals such as permingeatite, hakite, petrovicite, chameanite, uraninite, goethite, hematite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, as well as dolomite and calcite as rock-forming minerals. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of this mineral in the world is the historical dump of the Předbořice uranium mine, near the village of Květov in the southern Czech Republic.

## Quality Criteria As a micromineral, the collector's value of a pošepnýite specimen depends on the size and development of the crystals, as well as the richness of their occurrence on the rock matrix. Specimens with clearly visible, well-formed crystals, preferably in association with other rare selenides, are most desirable. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality – Předbořice in the Czech Republic. Material from this location is extremely difficult to obtain.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the microscopic size and delicacy of the crystals, mechanical cleaning is not recommended and may lead to the destruction of the specimen. Specimens should be left in their natural state. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and extreme temperature changes. The crystals are very brittle and sensitive to mechanical damage. ## Storage Pošepnýite specimens, as microminerals, should be stored in specialized boxes with transparent lids (so-called micromounts), which protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Avoid vibrations and shocks.
