Petitjeanite is a very rare secondary bismuth phosphate, forming small, lustrous, yellowish crystals on host rocks.

## Characteristics Petitjeanite is a mineral from the phosphate group, chemically a basic bismuth phosphate. It most often occurs as coatings and crusts composed of very small, but well-formed crystals. These take the form of tabular or short prismatic crystals and rarely exceed a fraction of a millimeter in size. A characteristic feature of petitjeanite is its strong, almost adamantine luster, which makes even small aggregates clearly visible against the dull host rock. ## Physical Properties The mineral's hardness on the Mohs scale is 4.5, classifying it as a material of medium hardness, susceptible to scratching by harder minerals. It is characterized by a very high density, approximately 6.65 g/cm³, which is typical for bismuth-rich minerals. The luster is adamantine, sometimes transitioning to greasy. It is transparent to translucent. ## Colors and Varieties Petitjeanite most often exhibits colors ranging from pale yellow and yellowish-white to greenish-yellow. Colorless and white specimens are also found. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1992 by Kurt Walenta, Karl Schmetzer, and Heinz-Jürgen Bernhardt. Its name honors Karl Petitjean (1881-1961), a German mineral collector from Cologne, who specialized in minerals from the Eifel region and provided the first samples for study. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, petitjeanite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest.

## Identification Helpful features for identifying petitjeanite include its characteristic, strong luster (adamantine to greasy), relatively high density noticeable even in small samples, yellowish coloration, and occurrence in the form of small, lustrous coatings. The environment of occurrence is also crucial – oxidation zones of bismuth-rich deposits. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Petitjeanite is sometimes confused with other secondary bismuth minerals. - **Preisingerite** has a very similar appearance and properties, but it is an arsenate, not a phosphate – their distinction usually requires chemical analysis (EDS). - **Mimetite** and **pyromorphite** can have similar colors, but usually form more distinct, hexagonal crystals and have a lower luster. - **Bismutite** most often forms earthy aggregates or radial aggregates with a pearly or dull luster and reacts with hydrochloric acid. ## Crystal Forms Petitjeanite forms very small, tabular or short prismatic crystals, which most often occur as druses and dense coatings covering rock surfaces. Single, isolated crystals are rarely observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Petitjeanite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation (weathering) zones of hydrothermal ore deposits that are rich in bismuth. It forms as a result of the alteration of primary bismuth minerals, such as bismuthinite, in the presence of phosphate-containing solutions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other secondary bismuth minerals and minerals from the oxidation zone. Its most common associations include bismutite, bismite, preisingerite, pyromorphite, mimetite, and quartz. ## Localities The most important and type locality for petitjeanite is the Krásno area near Horní Slavkov in the Czech Republic. Significant specimens also come from the historic deposit in Neustädtel (a district of Schneeberg) in Saxony, Germany. These are the main sources for collecting specimens.

## Quality Criteria The collector's value of petitjeanite primarily depends on the richness and extent of the coating on the host rock. The most prized specimens are those where the crystals, although small, are clearly visible, lustrous, and densely cover the surface. An additional advantage is a contrasting matrix (e.g., dark quartz) and association with other well-formed minerals, such as pyromorphite or bismutite. ## Popular Localities The vast majority of the best petitjeanite specimens available on the collector's market come from two classic localities: Krásno in the Czech Republic and Schneeberg in Germany. Specimens from these locations are considered the standard for this species.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Petitjeanite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, they can be rinsed with distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be strictly avoided, as they can damage delicate crystals and their aggregates. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids and strong chemicals. It should be protected from contact with them. Due to its relatively low hardness and brittleness, it is susceptible to mechanical damage, so scrubbing and contact with harder objects should be avoided. ## Storage Collector's specimens of petitjeanite are best stored in separate, sealed membrane boxes or in display cases with soft lining. This protects the fragile crystals from abrasion, dust, and accidental damage.
