Perettiite-(Y) is a very rare yttrium, manganese, and iron borosilicate, forming characteristic orange-red, prismatic crystals.

## Characteristics Perettiite-(Y) is a complex borosilicate from the osumilite group, distinguished by the presence of yttrium, manganese, and iron in its structure. It forms elongated, prismatic crystals, which often arrange into radial or fan-shaped aggregates. Its most striking visual feature is its intense, vivid color, ranging from orange-red to reddish-orange, combined with a strong, vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of perettiite-(Y) is approximately 6.5, making it a relatively scratch-resistant mineral. It is transparent, and its density is calculated at 3.86 g/cm³. It does not exhibit cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal, similar to quartz. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is known exclusively for one characteristic color palette: from intense orange-red to reddish-orange. The streak, or the color of the powdered mineral, is light orange. Due to its extreme rarity, no color or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Dr. Adolf Peretti (born 1956), a Swiss gemologist and mineralogist, founder of the Gemresearch Swisslab (GRS) laboratory, in recognition of his contributions to gemstone research. The "(Y)" suffix in the name (a Levinson modifier) indicates the dominance of the element yttrium in the appropriate site within the crystal structure. The mineral was officially approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2015. ## Applications Due to its exceptional rarity, perettiite-(Y) is solely a mineral of scientific and collector's interest. It has no industrial applications.

## Identification Perettiite-(Y) can be initially identified based on its unique characteristics: intense orange-red color, vitreous luster, prismatic crystal form often aggregated into radial clusters, and relatively high hardness. A key indicator is also its specific occurrence environment – miarolitic cavities in pegmatites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals This mineral may be confused with some varieties of spessartine (garnet), which also occurs in pegmatites and has an orange-red color. However, spessartine crystallizes in the isometric system, typically forming dodecahedra or trapezohedra, not prismatic aggregates. Final and certain differentiation from other rare minerals of similar appearance requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical microanalysis (EDS). ## Crystal Forms Perettiite-(Y) crystals are prismatic, ranging from short to elongated columns, terminated by flat pinacoid faces. The most characteristic forms are radial, fan-shaped aggregates, where individual crystals radiate from a single center.

Geological environment

## Genesis Perettiite-(Y) is a mineral of magmatic origin, crystallizing in the late stage of granitic pegmatite evolution. It forms in miarolitic cavities, which are voids in the rock, from residual, rare-element-rich (like yttrium), boron, and manganese hydrothermal fluids. ## Mineral Associations At its type locality, perettiite-(Y) occurs in association with other rare pegmatite minerals, such as hambergite, phenakite, and albite. It has also been found in association with an as-yet-unnamed, manganese analogue of perettiite. ## Localities The only confirmed and described locality for perettiite-(Y) in the world is its type locality in Momeik, Shan State, Myanmar (Burma). This region is known for the occurrence of many unique and valuable minerals and gemstones.

The highest-rated specimens are those that exhibit an intense, saturated, orange-red color, good transparency, and sharply terminated, undamaged crystals. Well-formed, radial aggregates on a small rock matrix are particularly desirable, as are associations with other rare minerals such as hambergite or phenakite. ## Popular Localities All known and available perettiite-(Y) specimens on the collector's market come from a single location in the world – from the pegmatites in the Momeik area of Myanmar.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Perettiite-(Y) specimens can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap, using a soft brush. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided, as they may cause damage if internal stresses or inclusions are present. ## What to Avoid The mineral should be protected from contact with strong acids and chemicals. As a precaution, it is advisable to avoid sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which could theoretically affect its color. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in separate, padded boxes to prevent scratching by harder minerals (e.g., quartz, topaz, corundum).
