Pectolite is a sodium and calcium silicate, forming characteristic radial aggregates of acicular crystals, and its blue variety is known as Larimar.

## Characteristics Pectolite is a silicate belonging to the wollastonite group. It most often forms dense, spherical or hemispherical aggregates composed of tightly packed, acicular or fibrous crystals. These aggregates have a radial structure, with crystals radiating from a common center, which gives them a characteristic, fibrous appearance. Single, well-formed crystals, which are usually elongated and flattened, are rarely found. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of 4.5-5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft. The luster is vitreous on crystal faces and silky on the surfaces of fibrous aggregates. It is a translucent mineral, and in thicker fragments, almost opaque. Its density is approximately 2.84-2.90 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Typical pectolite is white, grayish, or colorless. The most known and valued variety is **Larimar** - a blue, blue-green, or greenish pectolite found exclusively in the Dominican Republic. Its unique color results from the partial substitution of calcium by copper ions. The name Larimar is a trade name, not an official mineralogical name. ## History and Name The name pectolite comes from the Greek words *pektos* - "compact" or "congealed" and *lithos* - "stone", which refers to its typical form of occurrence as dense aggregates. The mineral was first described in 1828 by the German mineralogist Franz von Kobell based on specimens from the Alps in northern Italy. ## Applications The main application of pectolite is its collector's value. The Larimar variety is a valued ornamental and jewelry stone, used for producing jewelry, sculptures, and decorative objects.

## Identification The most important diagnostic feature of pectolite is its habit in the form of radial aggregates composed of small, acicular crystals. The silky luster on the surfaces of these aggregates is also very characteristic. Its occurrence in cavities of volcanic rocks, in association with zeolites, is a strong indication. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Pectolite is sometimes confused with **wollastonite**, which forms similar fibrous aggregates but usually occurs in metamorphic rocks (marbles, skarns) and has different associated minerals. It can also be confused with some zeolites, such as **natrolite** or **scolecite**, which also form acicular, radial aggregates. However, pectolite is usually harder and denser than them. The blue variety Larimar is practically unmistakable with other minerals. ## Crystal Forms Pectolite-M2abc crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It almost always occurs in the form of spherical, hemispherical, or fan-shaped aggregates with a radial-fibrous structure. Well-formed, isolated crystals are very rare and appear as flattened, bladed columns.

Geological environment

## Genesis Pectolite is a secondary mineral, formed by the activity of hydrothermal solutions at low temperatures. It typically crystallizes in gas vesicles and fractures in basic volcanic rocks, such as basalts and diabases. It is also found in serpentinites and as a product of alteration of other minerals in various types of igneous rocks. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with minerals from the zeolite group (e.g., analcime, natrolite, stilbite, heulandite), as well as with prehnite, datolite, apophyllite, and calcite. ## Localities Classic, known localities of white pectolite are in the USA, in quarries near Paterson and Bergen Hill in New Jersey, and in Magnet Cove in Arkansas. It also occurs in Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada and in Val di Fassa in Italy. The only place in the world where the gem variety Larimar occurs is the Filipinas mine in Barahona province in the Dominican Republic.

## Quality Criteria For typical white pectolite, the value of a specimen is determined by the size, symmetry, and degree of development of the spherical aggregates. Specimens with a distinct silky luster and free from damage are valued. In the case of the Larimar variety, color is key – the deeper and more intense the shade of blue, the higher the value. The most sought-after stones have a vibrant blue color with white patterns resembling a turtle shell (the so-called "turtle back pattern"). ## Popular Localities The most famous collector specimens of white pectolite come from historical localities in New Jersey (USA), which provided many classic specimens now in museums. For gemstone and jewelry enthusiasts, the only source of the highest quality Larimar is the Dominican Republic.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Pectolite specimens should be cleaned gently, using a soft brush and lukewarm water, possibly with a mild soap. After washing, rinse thoroughly and dry. Due to its perfect cleavage, ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided, as they can cause the mineral to crack. ## What to Avoid Pectolite is sensitive to acids, which can damage or completely dissolve it. It should be protected from impacts and falls, as it easily breaks along cleavage planes. The Larimar variety may be sensitive to prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, so it is recommended to avoid overheating and direct sunlight. ## Storage Due to its relatively low hardness, pectolite should be stored separately from harder minerals (e.g., quartz, beryls) to avoid scratches. It is best to keep it in a separate, padded box or pouch. Collector specimens should be displayed in closed showcases, protecting them from dust and mechanical damage.
