Description
## Characteristics Peatite-(Y) is a mineral with an exceptionally complex chemical composition, belonging to the phosphate group with additional carbonate anions. It occurs as anhedral (irregularly shaped) aggregates and grains, reaching sizes up to 1 cm. It does not form well-defined, individual crystals. It is brittle and typically transparent to translucent. ## Physical Properties The mineral's hardness on the Mohs scale is 3, making it relatively soft. It has a density of 3.62 g/cm³, a vitreous luster, and a white streak. It exhibits cleavage in three directions (along {100}, {010}, and {001} planes). ## Colors and Varieties It is usually colorless, although pale pink or brownish specimens are also found. Due to its extreme rarity, no commercial or colored varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2008. Its name honors Canadian mineral collector Allan F. Peat (1951–2012), who discovered this mineral. The suffix "-(Y)" in the name indicates the dominance of yttrium in the chemical composition at a specific site in the crystal structure. ## Uses Peatite-(Y) has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and as a collector's item, as a unique and extremely rare component of the Earth's crust.

## Identification Identifying peatite-(Y) based on visual features is practically impossible. This mineral does not form characteristic crystals, and its appearance is non-specific. A key indicator is its occurrence in the unique geological environment of Mont Saint-Hilaire, alongside other rare minerals. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical microanalysis (EDS/WDS). ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals In field conditions and in collections, it can be confused with many other light-colored, massive minerals found in pegmatites, such as albite, analcime, or natrolite. It is distinguished from them by its low hardness (3 on the Mohs scale) and relatively high density. However, without specialized equipment, distinguishing it is unfeasible. ## Crystal Forms Peatite-(Y) occurs exclusively in the form of anhedral (irregular) grains and massive aggregates. No well-formed crystals of this mineral have been found to date.
Geological environment
## Genesis Peatite-(Y) forms under very specific geochemical conditions. Its only known locality is in miarolitic cavities within a highly differentiated syenitic pegmatite. It is a product of crystallization from residual, rare-earth element (such as yttrium), lithium, and fluorine-rich post-magmatic fluids during the late stage of alkaline intrusion evolution. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with a rich assemblage of other rare minerals at Mont Saint-Hilaire. The most important associated minerals include aegirine, albite, analcime, catapleiite, eudialyte, microcline, natrolite, and sérandite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of peatite-(Y) in the world is the Poudrette quarry on Mont Saint-Hilaire, in the Montérégie region, Quebec province, Canada. This is its type locality.

## Quality Criteria For such a rare mineral that does not form aesthetic crystals, the main criterion for value is the size and richness of the peatite-(Y) aggregate on the rock matrix. Specimens where the mineral is clearly visible and occurs in association with other rare or well-formed minerals from Mont Saint-Hilaire are highly prized. Confirmation of identification by an analytical laboratory significantly increases the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The only source of peatite-(Y) specimens is its type locality – the Poudrette quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Canada. This locality is world-renowned for the occurrence of hundreds of unique and rare mineral species, and specimens from there are highly valued by collectors.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to its low hardness (3 on the Mohs scale), peatite-(Y) requires very careful cleaning. It is recommended to use only a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, it can be rinsed with distilled water and then gently dried. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided. ## What to Avoid The mineral is susceptible to scratching by harder materials (e.g., quartz, steel). As a carbonatophosphate, it can react with acids, so contact with household and laboratory chemicals must be strictly avoided. There is no data on its stability in sunlight, but it is advisable to avoid prolonged exposure to UV radiation and high temperatures. ## Storage Specimens of peatite-(Y) should be stored separately in a padded display box to prevent abrasion and mechanical damage. It is best kept under stable room conditions, away from dust and moisture.
