It is malleable and ductile, meaning it can be deformed without fracturing. It is characterized by a very high density, approximately 10.95 g/cm³, which is typical for heavy metal alloys. The luster is strongly metallic, and the fracture is hackly. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral has a uniform, silvery-white color, sometimes with a tin-white tint. It does not form color varieties. Over time, its surface may darken due to oxidation or reaction with sulfur present in the atmosphere. ## History and Name Paraschachnerite was first described in 1972 by E. Seel and G. Berz. Its name refers to its structural and chemical similarity to another silver amalgam – schachnerite (AgHg). The prefix "para-" indicates that it is a polymorph of schachnerite, meaning it has the same chemical composition but a different crystal structure. The type locality is the Landsberg mine in Obermoschel, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, paraschachnerite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare or systematic minerals, and it is also valuable research material for mineralogists.

Its occurrence is limited to oxidation zones of deposits containing mercury and silver. ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other silver amalgams, such as schachnerite, eugenite, or luanheite. Final differentiation from these minerals is almost exclusively possible using advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Visually, it is practically indistinguishable from schachnerite. ## Crystal Forms Paraschachnerite crystals belong to the isometric system and most often take the form of cubes, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra, as well as their combinations. They often form twins and crystal aggregates. They also occur as dendritic or spongy masses.

Geological environment

## Genesis Paraschachnerite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation (cementation) zones of ore deposits rich in mercury and silver. It forms at low temperatures as a result of reactions of hydrothermal solutions with primary minerals, such as cinnabar (HgS) and argentite (Ag₂S), or through the reduction of silver ions by native mercury. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other silver amalgams (schachnerite, eugenite), native mercury, native silver, cinnabar, limonite, barite, and quartz. ## Localities The most important and classic occurrences of this mineral are in Germany, in the mines of the Palatinate region (e.g., Landsberg, Vertrauen zu Gott, Carolina). It is also known from the Sala mine in Sweden, from the vicinity of Almadén in Spain, and from several locations in Chile (Arqueros) and Mexico (Huitzuco).

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp, and lustrous crystals of significant size (above a few millimeters). Rich crystal aggregates and aesthetic growths on the host rock (matrix), especially in association with other rare minerals like cinnabar, are also highly prized. Purity and the absence of oxidation traces significantly increase the value of a specimen. ## Popular Localities Classic and most sought-after paraschachnerite specimens come from the historic mines in the Obermoschel region of Germany. These localities have yielded the best-known crystals of this mineral and are considered reference sites for the species.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Paraschachnerite specimens should only be cleaned mechanically, using a very soft brush to remove dust. All contact with water and chemicals should be avoided. Due to its mercury content, all handling should be done with great caution. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids and sulfur compounds, which can cause it to darken and decompose. Heating should be avoided, as it can lead to the release of toxic mercury vapors. It should not be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaners or exposed to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Paraschachnerite should be stored in a sealed, airtight container (e.g., a "membrane box") to limit contact with air and moisture, which slows down the oxidation process. Due to the toxicity of mercury, specimens should be kept away from children, food, and areas of high humidity. Storage in stable temperature conditions is recommended.
