Parapierrotite is a very rare thallium and antimony sulfosalt, forming acicular, black crystals with a metallic luster.

## Characteristics Parapierrotite is a mineral from the sulfosalt group, chemically a complex thallium and antimony sulfide. It forms characteristic, elongated, acicular or prismatic crystals, which are often curved or tangled, forming radial, fibrous, or felt-like aggregates. Its color is black, sometimes with a visible reddish tint. It is an opaque mineral with a strong, metallic luster. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4. It has a density of approximately 5.02 g/cm³, which is a significant value, typical for minerals containing heavy metals like thallium. The luster is distinctly metallic, and the mineral is completely opaque. ## Colors and Varieties Parapierrotite occurs in a uniform, black color. Sometimes a subtle, reddish or reddish-brown tint can be observed on crystal surfaces or on the fracture. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name refers to its relationship with pierrotite. The prefix "para-" (from Greek "beside", "near") indicates that it is its monoclinic dimorph (polymorph). It was recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1975. The reference mineral is pierrotite, named after the French mineralogist Pierrot Picot (1930-2019). ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, parapierrotite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition in advanced systematic and rare mineral collections.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Characteristic features of parapierrotite include its black color, strong metallic luster, reddish-brown streak, and acicular crystal habit, often forming tangled aggregates. Co-occurrence with other rare thallium sulfosalts (e.g., realgar, orpiment) in a specific geological environment is a strong diagnostic indicator. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Parapierrotite is visually indistinguishable from its orthorhombic dimorph – pierrotite – without advanced studies such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is distinguished from the much more common stibnite by its reddish-brown streak (stibnite has a grayish-black streak). From other black, acicular sulfosalts, it can be distinguished mainly by chemical analysis (EDS) confirming the presence of thallium. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms acicular to elongated prismatic crystals. They are often strongly curved, and even coiled. It occurs in the form of radial aggregates, tangled aggregates resembling felt or mineral wool, as well as single needles embedded in rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Parapierrotite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in voids and fissures of dolomitic or calcareous-dolomitic rocks, where it crystallizes from solutions rich in thallium, antimony, and sulfur. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often occurs in association with other, usually rare, hydrothermal minerals. Its most common associations include: pierrotite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite, routhierite, laffittite, and other complex thallium sulfosalts. ## Localities The most important and classic locality (type locality) of parapierrotite is Jas Roux in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. It is also known from the Allchar mine in North Macedonia and the Zareh Shuran gold and arsenic deposit in Iran. These are the only confirmed, significant occurrences of this mineral worldwide.

## Quality Criteria The collector's appeal of parapierrotite primarily depends on the richness and aesthetics of the crystal aggregates. Specimens with well-formed, lustrous needles forming dense, radial, or tangled aggregates are most highly valued. A contrasting rock matrix (e.g., white dolomite) and the presence of other colorful associated minerals, such as red realgar or yellow orpiment, add significant value. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the type locality – Jas Roux in France – are by far the most sought after by collectors. They are considered the global standard for this mineral. Specimens from other localities are also valuable due to their extreme rarity.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Parapierrotite is a delicate mineral and potentially sensitive to chemicals. To remove dust, use only a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. Avoid wet cleaning, and especially the use of ultrasonics and detergents. ## What to Avoid The mineral should be protected from contact with water, acids, and other chemicals. As a sulfosalt, it may be sensitive to prolonged exposure to humid air. Avoid impacts and friction, which can damage the delicate, acicular crystals. ## Storage Parapierrotite specimens are best stored in enclosed, stable conditions, such as in a "micromount" box or a display cabinet, to protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Storage in a dry and dark place is recommended.
