Diagnostic features
## Identification Paragersdorffite is identified by its metallic luster, steel-gray color, relatively high density, and crystallization in the form of cubes or octahedra. It often occurs in association with other nickel and cobalt sulfides and arsenides. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with gersdorffite, from which it is practically impossible to distinguish without advanced analysis (e.g., X-ray diffraction). It differs from gersdorffite in its crystal structure (gersdorffite crystallizes in the monoclinic or triclinic system). From other metallic minerals, such as galena, it is distinguished by the absence of perfect cleavage. From skutterudite, it is distinguished by the presence of sulfur in its composition. ## Crystal Forms It crystallizes in the isometric system, forming well-developed, small crystals with a cubic (hexahedral) or octahedral habit. It also occurs as granular aggregates and embedded in the host rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Paragersdorffite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in ore veins at relatively high temperatures, above 400°C. It is a product of phase transformations of gersdorffite under elevated temperature conditions. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with gersdorffite, nickeline, ullmannite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, millerite, as well as minerals from the skutterudite group. ## Localities As a rare mineral, it is known from a few localities worldwide. Confirmed occurrences include nickel-cobalt deposits in the Sudbury region in Canada, some deposits in Germany (e.g., in Saarland), and in the Broken Hill region in Australia. It also occurs in deposits in China.

## Quality Criteria The most prized specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp-edged crystals with a mirror-like, metallic luster, free from signs of oxidation. The attractiveness of a specimen is enhanced by its contrasting placement on a rock matrix, especially in the company of other rare minerals. Due to the small size of the crystals, even small but well-formed specimens are sought after. ## Popular Localities Collector-grade specimens mainly come from classic localities such as the Sudbury region in Ontario (Canada) and some historical mines in Germany.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Paragersdorffite specimens should only be dry-cleaned, using a soft brush to remove dust. All contact with water and chemical agents should be avoided, as the mineral is susceptible to oxidation. ## What to Avoid Moisture, acids, detergents, and ultrasonic cleaners must be absolutely avoided. Prolonged exposure to humid air can lead to oxidation and tarnish formation, damaging the luster and surface of the mineral. It should also be protected from high temperatures. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in dry, airtight containers (e.g., boxes with a membrane or desiccant). Display should be in closed display cases, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
