Paolovite is a rare mineral from the native metals group, a natural alloy of palladium and tin, found in copper-nickel deposits.

## Characteristics Paolovite is a very rare mineral belonging to the native metals group, and chemically it is an alloy (intermetallic compound) of palladium and tin. It occurs as very small, rounded or irregular grains, usually not exceeding 0.2 mm in size. It is most often found as inclusions in other ore minerals. Its metallic appearance and silvery-white color are characteristic, although difficult to observe without appropriate magnification. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a strong, metallic luster. It is opaque. Due to the small size of the grains, many of its physical properties, such as hardness or density, are difficult to measure precisely and are based on calculated data or microscopic studies. ## Colors and Varieties Paolovite usually has a tin-white or silvery-white color with a creamy tint, especially visible in reflected light under a microscope. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Paoloi River in the Gusevskogo massif on the Taimyr Peninsula in Russia, near its discovery site. Paolovite was first described in 1974 by A.D. Genkin and his research team. It was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in the same year. ## Uses Paolovite has no industrial significance due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size. Its only significance is scientific and collectible, as a component of rare parageneses of platinum-group minerals.

## Identification Identification of paolovite is possible only with advanced laboratory techniques. In studies under a reflected light ore microscope, it is distinguished by a high reflectance, creamy-white color, and anisotropy. Final confirmation requires chemical composition analysis, for example, using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It is impossible to distinguish with the naked eye. Under a microscope, it can be confused with other platinum-group minerals (PGM) of similar color, such as atokite (Pd₃Sn), stannopalladinite (Pd₅Sn₂), native platinum, or some tellurides and arsenides. Only chemical analysis, which shows a characteristic palladium-to-tin ratio of 2:1, provides a definitive distinction. ## Crystal Forms Paolovite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, but almost never forms well-developed crystals. It is observed exclusively in the form of anhedral (undeveloped), rounded grains and aggregates, often intergrown with other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Paolovite is a mineral of magmatic origin. It forms in ultramafic and mafic layered intrusions, in processes associated with the crystallization of magma rich in copper, nickel, and iron sulfides. It concentrates along with other platinum-group minerals (PGM) in specific ore horizons. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare platinum-group minerals, such as atokite, rustenburgite, zvyagintsevite, as well as with more common sulfides: chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, bornite, and cubanite. It also co-occurs with magnetite and ilmenite. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for paolovite are the copper-nickel deposits in the Norilsk region (Oktyabrskoye, Talnakh) in Siberia, Russia. It is also found in other large magmatic complexes worldwide, such as Bushveld in South Africa, the Sudbury complex in Canada, and the Stillwater complex in Montana, USA.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a paolovite specimen is assessed quite differently than for typical minerals. Since it occurs as microscopic grains, the most important criterion is the richness of the paragenesis – the presence of many other rare platinum-group minerals on the same rock fragment. The certainty of identification, confirmed by chemical analysis, is also important. The size of the paolovite grains themselves, although always microscopic, also affects the value – larger inclusions are more desirable. ## Popular Localities The most prized specimens by specialized collectors come from the type localities in Russia – the Talnakh and Oktyabrskoye deposits in the Norilsk region. Material from these locations is considered classic for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing paolovite, which are usually inclusions in other minerals, do not require and should not be subjected to mechanical or chemical cleaning. Any attempt to isolate microscopic grains can lead to their destruction. Gentle dust removal with compressed air or a soft brush is sufficient. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, especially acids, which can react with surrounding sulfides or paolovite itself. Do not heat the specimen or expose it to rapid temperature changes. Ultrasonic cleaning is also not recommended. ## Storage Specimens containing paolovite are best stored in stable conditions, in closed "micromount" boxes that protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. The label should precisely indicate the location of the microscopic grains on the specimen.
