Panichiite is a very rare tin halide, discovered at the La Fossa volcano on Vulcano Island, Italy.

## Characteristics Panichiite is an extremely rare mineral from the halide group. It occurs as very fine, colorless crystals with a regular habit, reaching up to 0.1 mm in size. These crystals form small coatings and aggregates on volcanic rocks. Due to its size and rarity, it is a mineral primarily of interest to scientists and specialized micromineral collectors. ## Physical Properties Panichiite crystals exhibit a luster described as vitreous to adamantine. They are transparent and colorless. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, most physical properties, such as hardness or density, have not been precisely measured, but rather calculated based on crystallographic data. ## History and Name The mineral was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2023 under number IMA2023-032. Its name honors Corrado Panichi (1942–2022), an Italian geochemist and professor at the University of Pisa, in recognition of his contributions to geochemical research, especially of thermal waters and volcanic gases.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of panichiite is possible only with advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). Visual identification in the field or even under a standard microscope is impossible. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals It can be confused with other colorless, microscopic minerals found in volcanic fumaroles, such as sal ammoniac or other halides. Definitive differentiation requires specialized research equipment. ## Crystal forms It forms very small, well-formed, cubic crystals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Panichiite forms as a result of volcanic fumarole activity. It crystallizes directly from volcanic gases at temperatures of approximately 200-250°C. It is a typical sublimational mineral, forming under specific chemical and thermal conditions prevalent in active volcanic systems. ## Mineral associations At its type locality, it co-occurs with sal ammoniac (ammonium chloride). ## Localities The only known occurrence of panichiite in the world is the La Fossa crater on Vulcano Island, part of the Aeolian Islands archipelago in Italy.

## Quality criteria As a micromineral, the value of a specimen is primarily determined by the quality and abundance of crystals visible under a microscope, as well as confirmed identification. The most valuable samples are those with numerous, well-formed crystals on a natural rock matrix.

## Cleaning Due to their microscopic size and delicacy, specimens should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically.
