## Characteristics Onoratoite is an antimony oxychloride that visually appears as aggregates of very fine, acicular or fibrous crystals. It most commonly forms dense, felted or matted masses, as well as radial, fan-like aggregates. Individual crystals are usually too small to be observed without magnification. This mineral is valued for its delicate structure and mode of occurrence. ## Physical Properties Onoratoite crystals exhibit a strong, adamantine luster, which gives their aggregates a characteristic appearance. The mineral is translucent. Its density is approximately 5.05 g/cm³, which is a relatively high value, typical for antimony-bearing minerals. Hardness has not been precisely determined due to the microcrystalline and fibrous nature of the mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Onoratoite occurs in a limited color range. It is most often colorless, white, or has a pale yellow tint. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was described in 1968 and named after Ettore Onorato (1899–1967), a professor of mineralogy at the University of Rome in Italy. Its discovery is associated with the Cetine di Cotorniano mine in Tuscany, which remains its type locality. ## Uses Onoratoite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is sought after by advanced collectors of rare minerals.

## Identification Characteristic features of onoratoite are its mode of occurrence as felted or fibrous masses composed of very fine, acicular crystals, as well as its strong, adamantine luster. A key diagnostic clue is its origin from the Cetine mine in Italy and its co-occurrence with other rare antimony minerals. ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals Onoratoite can be confused with other white, acicular secondary minerals, such as valentinite, which also occurs in Cetine but usually forms slightly coarser crystals with a different habit. It can also be mistaken for some zeolites or sulfates; however, onoratoite is distinguished by its significantly higher density and specific, adamantine luster. Certain identification most often requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Crystals are always acicular, very thin, and elongated. They form dense, tangled aggregates with a felt-like or cotton-like appearance (felted, matted), as well as radial and fan-shaped aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Onoratoite is a secondary mineral. It forms in the oxidation zones of hydrothermal antimony deposits as a result of the alteration of the primary antimony sulfide – stibnite (Sb₂S₃). The presence of chloride ions, likely originating from hydrothermal solutions, is essential for its crystallization. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other antimony compounds, which is typical for its formation environment. It is most often accompanied by stibnite, valentinite, senarmontite, kermesite, and other rare antimony oxysalts, such as cetineite. ## Localities The most important and practically sole source of well-formed collector specimens of onoratoite is its type locality – the Cetine di Cotorniano mine in Chiusdino, in the province of Siena (Tuscany, Italy). Other reports of its occurrence are few and of no collector significance.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized onoratoite specimens are those that feature rich, dense, and pure white coverings of acicular crystals on a contrasting rock matrix. The aesthetic composition, color purity, and absence of damage to the delicate aggregates are important. Specimens with accompanying, well-formed crystals of other rare minerals from this locality, e.g., cetineite, are particularly sought after. ## Popular Localities For collectors, there is only one place in the world: the Cetine di Cotorniano mine in Tuscany, Italy. Practically all specimens available on the collector's market come from there.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Onoratoite specimens are extremely delicate and brittle. Mechanical cleaning is out of the question. To remove dust, it is best to use compressed air from a safe distance. As a last resort, very careful and brief rinsing in distilled water is permissible, followed by immediate drying, for example, with an air stream. ## What to Avoid Ultrasonic cleaners, all chemicals, acids, and detergents should be absolutely avoided. The crystals are sensitive to shocks and impacts, so they should be handled with the utmost care. Specimens should not be exposed to moisture. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, padded collector's boxes (micromount type) that protect them from mechanical damage, dust, and humidity changes. This is the best way to preserve their delicate structure.
