Diagnostic features
## Identification The characteristic features of olszanskite are its forms of occurrence – delicate, acicular crystals forming radial or spherulitic aggregates. Its white color, silky luster of aggregates, and low hardness (around 3) are also helpful in identification. This mineral is associated with a specific geological environment – magnesian skarns. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Olszanskite can be confused with other borates or secondary minerals forming similar aggregates, such as calcite, aragonite, or zeolites (e.g., natrolite). It is distinguished from calcite and aragonite by its lack of reaction with hydrochloric acid. Distinguishing it from zeolites may require advanced research methods, although olszanskite is much rarer and occurs in a specific paragenesis with skarn rocks. ## Crystal Forms Crystals have an acicular or capillary form, elongated along one axis. They usually occur as radial aggregates, spherulites (spherical clusters), or fibrous mats.
Geological environment
## Genesis Olszanskite is a hydrothermal mineral, forming in the oxidation zones of boron deposits. It forms at low temperatures in magnesian skarns, which developed at the contact of granitoid intrusions with carbonate rocks (dolomites). ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other borates, such as kurchatovite, sakhaite, szaibelyite, as well as with calcite, dolomite, magnetite, and serpentine. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for this mineral are in Russia, including the discovery site – the Solongo boron deposit in Buryatia, and the Tayozhnoye deposit in Yakutia. It has also been reported in the Fuka mine in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, and in the N'Chwaning mines in South Africa. These are the main, well-documented localities for this rare mineral.

## Quality Criteria For collectors, the most valuable specimens are those with well-formed, distinct spherulites or rich, "fluffy" clusters of acicular crystals. Contrast with a dark matrix significantly enhances the aesthetics and value of the specimen. The size of the aggregates and the absence of damage to delicate structures are also important. ## Popular Localities The most prized specimens come from Russian localities, especially from the Tayozhnoye deposit in Yakutia, known for its rich clusters of this mineral. Specimens from the Fuka mine in Japan are also sought after by collectors specializing in skarn minerals.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Clean only very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its low hardness and possible reactivity with water, avoid wet cleaning. If absolutely necessary, a minimal amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab can be used, avoiding saturation of the specimen. ## What to Avoid Absolutely avoid contact with water and acids, which can damage or dissolve the mineral. It is very soft and brittle, susceptible to mechanical damage. Protect it from high temperatures, which can lead to dehydration and destruction of the crystal structure. ## Storage Olszanskite specimens are best stored in closed, padded collector boxes or display cases to protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Keep it away from harder minerals that could scratch it.
