Diagnostic features
## Identification The characteristic features of niveolanite are its snow-white, spherical aggregates with a silky luster, composed of radially arranged fibers. It is very soft and light. It reacts with hydrochloric acid, releasing carbon dioxide bubbles, which is typical for carbonates. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other white, fibrous minerals from alkaline environments, such as artinite or hydromagnesite. Differentiation requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical analysis (EDS/WDS), due to visual similarity and small specimen sizes. ## Crystal Forms Niveolanite forms spherical or hemispherical aggregates up to 2 mm in diameter. These aggregates consist of very fine, acicular or fibrous crystals that are too small to be observed with the naked eye. These crystals have a radial structure within the aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Niveolanite is a secondary mineral, forming in the late stages of hydrothermal processes within highly differentiated, alkaline nepheline syenite intrusions. It crystallizes in rock cavities and fissures from solutions rich in sodium, beryllium, and carbonates. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals typical of the Mont Saint-Hilaire complex. Its paragenesis includes analcime, microcline, aegirine, natrolite, rhodochrosite, sidoarenkite, catapleiite, and petersenite-(Ce), among others. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of niveolanite in the world is its type locality – the Poudrette quarry, located on Mont Saint-Hilaire, in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. This is one of the most famous mineralogical sites in the world, known for the occurrence of hundreds of unique minerals.

## Quality Criteria The quality of niveolanite specimens is primarily assessed based on the size and development of the spherical aggregates. The most prized specimens are those with distinct, undamaged spheres close to the maximum diameter (approx. 2 mm), contrastingly set on a rock matrix. Association with other rare minerals from Mont Saint-Hilaire is also important. ## Popular Localities All known niveolanite specimens come from a single location – the Poudrette quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada. This is the sole source of this mineral, making every specimen from there unique.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Niveolanite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive. Mechanical cleaning is not recommended. If necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance to remove loose dust particles. Avoid contact with water, which can damage or dissolve the mineral. ## What to Avoid Absolutely avoid contact with water, acids, and other chemicals. The mineral is very soft and brittle, susceptible to mechanical damage with the slightest touch. It should not be heated or exposed to changes in humidity. ## Storage Niveolanite specimens should be stored in sealed, stable containers (e.g., "micromount" type), protected from dust, moisture, and physical damage. It is best to store it in a dry place, away from sources of vibration.
