Niahite is an extremely rare phosphate mineral, forming tiny, pale yellow crystals in caves as a product of guano reacting with manganese.

## Characteristics Niahite is a hydrated ammonium manganese phosphate, belonging to the struvite group. It occurs as very small, thin, tabular or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 1 mm in length. These crystals often form radiating aggregates, rosettes, or thin coatings and crusts on rock surfaces. It can also be found in earthy and powdery masses. It is a brittle and very soft mineral. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of niahite is only 1.5, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It exhibits a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. Its density is approximately 2.45 g/cm³. A key and unusual property is its water solubility, which critically influences how specimens should be handled. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is most commonly pale straw-yellow, but can also be colorless. There are no named color varieties or commercial forms. ## History and Name Niahite was described as a new mineral in 1977 by C.R. Bridge and M.E. Pryce. Its name comes from its discovery locality – the Great Cave of Niah in Niah National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia, which remains its type locality. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, small crystal size, and instability, niahite has no practical applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is valued by specialized collectors of rare minerals and micromount specimens.

## Identification Characteristic features of niahite include its occurrence environment (caves with guano deposits), extreme softness (Mohs hardness 1.5), pale yellow color, and water solubility. Its occurrence as tiny, tabular crystals in radiating aggregates is also a good indicator. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Niahite can be confused with other rare cave phosphates such as struvite or newberyite. Struvite does not contain manganese and crystallizes in a different system. Newberyite also has a similar appearance and genesis. Reliable differentiation of these minerals under amateur conditions is practically impossible and usually requires advanced analyses, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Niahite crystals are thin, flattened, tabular or bladed. They typically form fan-like or radiating aggregates and rosettes. They also occur as fine, dusty or earthy coatings on the host rock.

## Quality Criteria The quality of niahite specimens is primarily assessed from a micromount collecting perspective. Samples with well-formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic, radiating aggregates are most desirable. Rich mineralization on a small rock matrix and co-occurrence with other rare cave minerals are also highly valued. The clarity and transparency of the crystals, although difficult to assess with the naked eye, also increase the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible specimens is the historical locality in the Great Cave of Niah in Malaysia. Finding this mineral on the market is an exceptional event.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Niahite is water-soluble, so **it must never be cleaned wet**. The only safe method is to very gently remove dust with a soft, dry brush (e.g., sable) or carefully use a stream of compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, water vapor, and all liquid chemicals must be strictly avoided. The mineral is very sensitive to moisture, which can damage or completely dissolve it. It is also very soft and brittle, so it must be protected from any impact, scratching, or vibrations. ## Storage Niahite specimens must be stored in completely dry conditions. It is recommended to keep them in tightly sealed containers (e.g., perky boxes) along with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). They should be protected from dust and sudden temperature changes.
