Diagnostic features
## Identification Nefedovite is difficult to identify visually without specialized equipment. Key features include its occurrence in a specific geological environment (alkaline massifs), its colorless nature, vitreous luster, and lack of cleavage. It often forms granular aggregates. Certain identification requires chemical analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from similar minerals It can be confused with other colorless minerals found in the same environment, such as some feldspars, sodalite, or natrolite. It is distinguished from them by its lack of cleavage (feldspars have distinct cleavage), lower hardness, and specific chemical composition. Unlike sodalite, nefedovite does not react with hydrochloric acid in the same way. ## Crystal forms Nefedovite crystals are rare and usually very small, reaching up to 1 mm in length. They take the form of short prisms or tablets with a hexagonal cross-section. It is most commonly found as granular aggregates or as irregular grains within the host rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Nefedovite is a hydrothermal mineral associated with highly alkaline, desilicated pegmatites. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in veins cutting nepheline syenites and other alkaline rocks. It forms in an environment rich in sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and fluorine. ## Mineral associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals. In its type locality (Khibiny Massif), it has been found in association with microcline, sodalite, aegirine, eudialyte, lorenzenite, lamprophyllite, mosandrite, as well as other phosphates such as apatite or belovite-(Ce). ## Localities The most important and best-documented occurrences of nefedovite in the world are in Russia, in the ultra-alkaline massifs on the Kola Peninsula. These are primarily the Khibiny Massif (Mount Koashva, Rasvumchorr, Yukspor) and the Lovozero Massif (Mount Alluaiw). Outside Russia, its occurrence has not been confirmed.

## Quality criteria The most desirable specimens for collectors are those with visible, well-formed, even if small, nefedovite crystals. Rich granular aggregates, contrasting with the colorful host rock, are also highly valued. The clarity (transparency) of the crystals and their size significantly increase the specimen's value. Association with other rare minerals from the Kola Peninsula is also important. ## Popular localities By far the most prized specimens come from the type locality - Mount Koashva in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. This is practically the only source of collectible specimens of this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning It is recommended to clean specimens only with a soft brush to remove dust. The use of water, especially with detergents, is inadvisable due to the mineral's potential reactivity. ## What to avoid Avoid contact with all acids and strong chemical agents, which can damage the mineral's surface. Nefedovite is sensitive to rapid temperature changes. It should not be exposed to prolonged direct sunlight. ## Storage Nefedovite specimens are best stored in stable conditions, in closed display boxes, to protect them from dust, humidity, and mechanical damage. Due to its rarity, it is worth separating it from harder minerals.
