Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of naldrettite is possible only through advanced laboratory techniques, such as reflected light microscopy and chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). Its characteristic features include a creamy-white color with a pinkish tint, anisotropy, and chemical composition. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Under the microscope, it can be confused with other platinum-group minerals and antimonides, such as sudburyite (PdSb) or stibiopalladinite (Pd₅Sb₂). Final differentiation requires precise analysis of the palladium to antimony ratio. ## Crystal Forms Naldrettite forms fine, hexagonal or irregular, rounded grains, often as inclusions in other sulfide minerals, such as pentlandite.
Geological environment
## Genesis Naldrettite is a mineral of magmatic origin. It crystallizes in the late stages of ultramafic magma solidification, in processes associated with sulfide segregation. It forms in an environment rich in palladium and antimony, at temperatures below 495°C. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with other platinum-group minerals (PGM) and sulfides. It is most commonly associated with pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sudburyite, stibiopalladinite, kotulskite, merenskyite, and native gold. ## Localities The main and type locality (discovery site) is the Mesocatactu deposit in the Raglan complex, Quebec, Canada. It has also been identified in the Lukkulaisvaara deposit in Karelia, Russia, and in the Skaergaard complex in Greenland. These are the only confirmed occurrences worldwide.

## Quality Criteria As a micromineral, the value of a naldrettite specimen depends on the confirmation of its identity through laboratory analysis. The most valuable specimens are those in which naldrettite grains are relatively large (above 50 micrometers), well-formed, and clearly visible in association with other rare minerals. The specimen must originate from one of the few known localities. ## Popular Localities The most sought-after specimens come from the type locality – the Mesocatactu deposit in Quebec (Canada).
Care and storage
## Cleaning Naldrettite specimens occur as microscopic inclusions in the host rock and do not require cleaning. Any attempts at mechanical or chemical cleaning will destroy the specimen. ## What to Avoid Avoid abrasion, polishing, and contact with any chemicals. The specimen is stable under normal conditions. ## Storage Specimens containing naldrettite, usually in the form of polished sections or rock fragments, should be stored in specialized micromineral boxes, protecting them from dust and mechanical damage.
