Description

## Characteristics Mozgovite is a rare mineral from the sulfosalt group, chemically classified as a lead-bismuth sulfide. It forms small, elongated, bladed or acicular crystals, rarely exceeding a few millimeters in length. It typically occurs as felted, radial, or disordered aggregates. It is characterized by a metallic luster and a lead-gray or steel-gray color. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque and relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3-3.5. It has a high density, about 7.17 g/cm³, which is typical for minerals containing lead and bismuth. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties Mozgovite has a constant, characteristic color ranging from lead-gray to steel-gray. No color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name, approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1996, honors Nina Nikolaevna Mozgova (1931-2019), a Russian mineralogist and crystallochemist, a specialist in sulfosalts and ore minerals from the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry (IGEM) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. ## Uses Mozgovite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is valued by advanced collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identifying mozgovite under amateur conditions is very difficult. Clues may include its lead-gray color, metallic luster, acicular crystal habit, and high density. It often occurs in paragenesis with other bismuth sulfosalts. Certain identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS/WDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Mozgovite is visually almost impossible to distinguish from many other lead-bismuth sulfosalts, such as bismuthinite, cosalite, lillianite, or heyrovskyite. All these minerals have similar color, luster, and habit. Crucial for differentiation are precise chemical analyses determining the ratio of individual metals to sulfur. ## Crystal Forms Mozgovite crystals are elongated along one axis, taking on an acicular or thin bladed form. They usually form disordered, felted aggregates, as well as radial or fibrous aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Mozgovite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms under high-temperature conditions in quartz-wolframite-scheelite veins. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other sulfosalts and sulfides. Its most common associated minerals include bismuthinite, cosalite, galena, lillianite, heyrovskyite, as well as scheelite, wolframite, and quartz. ## Localities The most important and typical locality for mozgovite is the Kti-Teberda deposit (Russian: Кти-Теберда) in Karachay-Cherkessia, North Caucasus, Russia. This is the only locality from which well-documented and studied specimens of this mineral originate.

## Quality Criteria The most valuable specimens for collectors are those with well-formed, undamaged acicular crystals, preferably forming aesthetic, radial aggregates. A contrasting matrix, for example, of white quartz, significantly enhances the visual appeal of the specimen. Due to the overall rarity and small size of the crystals, any mozgovite-rich specimen is considered valuable. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible mozgovite specimens is its type locality - the Kti-Teberda deposit in Russia. Specimens from this location are the standard for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Mozgovite specimens are very delicate and should be handled with care. To remove dust, it is best to use a soft, dry brush. Avoid washing in water, and if absolutely necessary, use only distilled water and dry the specimen immediately. Ultrasonic cleaning is prohibited. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids and other chemical reagents. Due to its low hardness and perfect cleavage, it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. It should be protected from impacts and contact with harder minerals. ## Storage It is recommended to store mozgovite specimens in separate, sealed display boxes, lined with soft material, to prevent damage and dust accumulation. They should be kept in stable room conditions, away from sources of moisture and chemical contaminants.
