Moragite is a newly discovered mineral from the czochralskiite group, found in Scotland, characterized by a unique crystal structure and chemical composition.

## Characteristics Moragite is a mineral from the czochralskiite group, formally recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2023. It occurs as very fine, anhedral (lacking crystal faces) grains, typically less than 50 micrometers in size. These grains are intergrown with other minerals, forming complex aggregates. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, visual features visible to the naked eye cannot be determined. ## Physical Properties Due to the very fine grain size, many physical properties, such as hardness, density, luster, or transparency, have not yet been precisely measured. The hardness is estimated to be approximately 5 on the Mohs scale, and the density calculated based on the formula and unit cell parameters is 3.45 g/cm³. The luster is described as vitreous. ## Colors and Varieties Observed moragite grains are colorless. No varieties of this mineral have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its type locality – Morag (Mòrag) in northwestern Scotland, where it was discovered. The name refers to local folklore. The mineral was described by a research team led by Simon M. Clark and approved by the IMA under number 2023-088. ## Applications Moragite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a newly discovered and very rare mineral species.

## Identification Identification of moragite is impossible without advanced laboratory techniques. It requires chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm its composition and crystal structure. The mineral is colorless and has a vitreous luster. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Moragite is chemically and structurally related to other minerals of the czochralskiite group, such as czochralskiite, dorrite, and macraeite. Distinguishing it from these requires precise chemical analysis, particularly of the proportions of titanium, iron, magnesium, and aluminum. ## Crystal Forms Moragite forms exclusively very fine, anhedral grains that do not exhibit well-formed crystal faces. They occur as aggregates and intergrowths with other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Moragite forms under conditions of contact metamorphism. At its type locality (Morag, Scotland), it was found in pyroxene-plagioclase xenoliths within a gabbro intrusion. These xenoliths represent fragments of sedimentary rocks (arkoses) that were subjected to high temperatures in contact with magma. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with minerals such as czochralskiite, dorrite, macraeite, hercynite, anorthite, corundum, titanite, hibonite, perovskite, and minerals from the clinopyroxene group. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of moragite in the world is its type locality: Creag an t-Sionnaich, Morag, North West Highlands, Scotland, United Kingdom.

## Quality Criteria As a microscopic mineral, moragite is not evaluated based on typical collector criteria such as size, color, or crystal clarity. The value of a specimen lies in its scientific significance as a type material (holotype or cotype) and the richness of the mineral association on the sample. The most valuable are rock fragments with analytically confirmed presence of moragite, preferably accompanied by other rare contact metamorphic minerals. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality in Scotland. The material is extremely rare and primarily available in scientific institutions and specialized collections of rare minerals (so-called "micromounts").

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its microscopic size and occurrence as intergrown grains within the host rock, isolated moragite crystals are not available. Rock specimens containing moragite can only be cleaned using a soft, dry brush to remove dust. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaning, washing with water, and using any chemical agents that could damage the host rock or co-occurring minerals. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in stable conditions, away from dust, humidity, and extreme temperature changes. It is best to store them in sealed display boxes or cabinets.
