Diagnostic features
## Identification Key diagnostic features of montroydite include its extremely high density, low hardness (can be scratched with a fingernail), intense red or orange-red color, and adamantine luster. Its tendency to darken under light is also characteristic. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Montroydite can be confused with cinnabar (HgS), which also has a red color and occurs in similar environments. However, cinnabar has a lower density (approx. 8.1 g/cm³), higher hardness (2-2.5), and a characteristic bright red streak, whereas montroydite's streak is orange-yellow. Realgar (As₄S₄) is also red and soft, but has a significantly lower density (approx. 3.56 g/cm³) and is unstable in light in a different way (decomposes into pararealgar). ## Crystal Forms Montroydite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It most often forms small, prismatic crystals with a square-like cross-section or short, thick tabular crystals. It also occurs as granular aggregates or as coatings and crusts.
Geological environment
## Genesis Montroydite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones of mercury deposits. It forms under low-temperature, alkaline conditions, as a result of the weathering of other mercury minerals, mainly cinnabar and native mercury. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other rare mercury minerals, such as native mercury, cinnabar, calomel, eglestonite, terlinguaite, kleinite, as well as with calcite, gypsum, and opal. ## Localities The most important and classic locality, from which the world's best specimens originate, is the historic Terlingua mining district in Brewster County, Texas, USA. Other known occurrences include the Socrates Mine in Sonoma County, California (USA), as well as localities in Mexico (Guerrero), Germany (Palatinate), Kyrgyzstan (Khaidarkan), and Spain (Asturias).

## Quality Criteria The most prized montroydite specimens are characterized by sharply terminated, well-formed crystals with an intense, orange-red color and strong luster. The transparency of the crystals and their size are important – specimens with crystals exceeding a few millimeters are exceptionally rare. Attractiveness is enhanced by a contrasting placement on a light rock matrix, often accompanied by other rare mercury minerals. ## Popular Localities The absolutely classic and most desired source of montroydite for collectors is the Terlingua district in Texas. Specimens from there, often originating from old collections, fetch the highest prices and are considered exemplary for this species.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Montroydite is an extremely delicate and toxic mineral. Contact with water and other chemicals should be strictly avoided. Cleaning should be limited to very carefully removing dust with a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid This mineral is sensitive to light, under the influence of which it darkens, losing its characteristic red color. Exposure to sunlight and strong artificial lighting should be avoided. It is very soft, susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. As a mercury mineral, it is highly toxic – avoid inhaling dust and direct skin contact. Wash hands thoroughly after any contact. ## Storage Montroydite specimens should be stored in complete darkness, in a tightly sealed, labeled container (e.g., a "perky box"), to limit light exposure and prevent accidental contact. Keep away from children and pets.
