## Characteristics Monimolite is a mineral belonging to the oxide group, specifically to the pyrochlore supergroup. It typically occurs as irregular, rounded grains or as massive aggregates, rarely forming poorly developed, octahedral crystals. Its size is usually small, and macroscopic specimens are rare. It is opaque and characterized by variable, often dark coloration. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively heavy due to its high lead content, which is reflected in its density of approximately 6.58 g/cm³. Its Mohs hardness is estimated at 5 to 6. Monimolite exhibits a resinous to submetallic luster. It shows no cleavage, and its fracture is uneven to conchoidal. ## Colors and Varieties Monimolite most often takes on a greenish-yellow, brownish, to almost black color. Its streak is lighter than the mineral itself, usually yellowish or grayish. No distinct commercial or gemological varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The name "monimolite" comes from the Greek words "monimos" (μόνιμος) meaning "stable" or "durable" and "lithos" (λίθος) meaning "stone," which likely refers to its chemical stability or resistance to acids. The mineral was first described in 1865 by Swedish mineralogists L.J. Igelström and F.L. Ekman based on samples from the Harstigen mine in Sweden.

## Genesis Monimolite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones of ore deposits, especially in metamorphic rocks such as skarns, rich in manganese, lead, and antimony. It forms as a result of the alteration of primary minerals containing these elements. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other minerals typical of this environment, such as magnetite, hausmannite, barite, calcite, tephroite, richterite, as well as other rare lead and antimony minerals, e.g., from the pyrochlore group. ## Localities The most important and classic monimolite localities are in Sweden, in the Harstigen and Långban mines in the Värmland region. Outside of Sweden, its occurrence has been reported in small quantities in Franklin, New Jersey (USA) and in the Kombat mine in Namibia.

Material from these localities is considered classic and serves as a reference point for this mineral.

## Cleaning Due to its rarity and potential fragility, only gentle cleaning with a soft, dry brush is recommended to remove dust.
