Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of mongshanite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In field conditions and typical collections, it is unrecognizable. It is distinguished by its black color, metallic luster, and occurrence in a specific geological environment (kimberlites). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Mongshanite can be confused with other black, opaque accessory minerals in kimberlites, such as ilmenite, magnetite, chromite, or spinels. Differentiation requires specialized chemical analysis, especially confirmation of magnesium and titanium dominance. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms only very fine, irregular, anhedral grains within the host rock. No well-formed crystals have been observed.
Geological environment
## Genesis Mongshanite is a magmatic mineral, crystallizing in ultramafic rocks – kimberlites. It forms under high pressure and temperature conditions deep within the Earth's mantle and is then brought to the surface with kimberlitic magma. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with minerals typical of kimberlites, such as diamond, olivine, pyrope (a garnet variety), ilmenite, chromite, magnetite, pyrrhotite, and minerals from the perovskite group. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of mongshanite in the world is its type locality: the Mengyin kimberlite (Fuxian kimberlite field) in Shandong Province, China.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a mongshanite specimen depends solely on the presence of analytically confirmed grains of this mineral. As they are microscopic, specimens have primarily scientific value. For collectors specializing in rare minerals (so-called "micromounts" or "species collectors"), any specimen with documented mongshanite presence is valuable, ideally with grains visible under a microscope within the host rock. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality in China. Material from this location is extremely difficult to obtain.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to the microscopic size of grains embedded in the host rock, cleaning individual specimens is not practical. If cleaning of the rock matrix is necessary, only compressed air should be used to remove dust. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, ultrasonics, and any mechanical cleaning methods that could damage or dislodge small mongshanite grains from the substrate. ## Storage Specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in sealed "micromount" boxes, to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Avoid vibrations and shocks.
