Moëloite is a very rare sulfosalt mineral, a lead antimony sulfide, forming acicular crystals.

Description

## Characteristics Moëloite is a lead antimony sulfide belonging to the sulfosalt group. It forms very small, acicular or capillary crystals, which usually occur as tangled aggregates resembling felt or mineral wool. Individual crystals rarely exceed 1 mm in length. The mineral has a black color and a characteristic metallic luster on fresh surfaces. ## Physical Properties Moëloite is an opaque mineral with a black color and a black streak. Its Mohs hardness is approximately 2.5, meaning it is soft and can be scratched by copper. It is characterized by a high density of 5.81 g/cm³, which is typical for lead-bearing minerals. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs exclusively in black. No color varieties or commercial forms are known. ## History and Name The name moëloite comes from its discovery locality – the Moëlo deposit in the municipality of Saint-Guérin (Savoie, France). It was officially recognized as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1992, and its full scientific description was published in 1995. The name was given in honor of the type locality. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence as microscopic crystals, moëloite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and for scientists.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of moëloite in the field or based on visual characteristics is practically impossible. Its characteristic acicular or fibrous habit, black color, and metallic luster are distinctive. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical microanalysis (EDS/WDS), which allow for the determination of its unique composition and crystal structure. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Macroscopically, moëloite is indistinguishable from many other black, acicular sulfosalts, such as zinkenite, dadsonite, boulangerite, or jamesonite. All these minerals have a similar appearance, hardness, and luster. The only way to differentiate them is through laboratory analysis. ## Crystal Forms Moëloite crystallizes in the form of very thin, elongated needles, often not exceeding 1 mm in length. These crystals form dense, tangled aggregates resembling felt or cotton.

Geological environment

## Genesis Moëloite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in fractures and quartz veins cutting metamorphic rocks, such as Carboniferous shales. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other lead and antimony sulfosalts. The most common associated minerals include boulangerite, dadsonite, zinkenite, and semseyite. It also co-occurs with quartz, which is the main component of hydrothermal veins. ## Localities The only significant and confirmed locality for moëloite in the world is its type locality – the Moëlo deposit, located in the municipality of Saint-Guérin in the Tarentaise Valley (Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, France).

## Quality Criteria The quality of moëloite specimens, being a "micromount" type mineral, is assessed differently than for large crystals. Samples with rich, dense aggregates of well-formed, lustrous needles are most valued. The presence of other rare associated minerals on the same rock matrix adds additional value. Precise locality information (Moëlo deposit) and, if possible, analytical confirmation are also crucial. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the historical type locality in France. Finding moëloite outside this locality is an event of scientific significance.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Moëloite specimens are extremely delicate and should be cleaned with the utmost care. Dry cleaning is recommended, using a soft brush to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid Moëloite crystals are very brittle and soft, so any impacts, scratches, or vibrations should be avoided. The mineral is sensitive to acids. It should be protected from moisture and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, stable containers (e.g., "micromount" type) to protect them from mechanical damage, dust, and moisture. Display should be in controlled conditions, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
