This mineral is typically deep red to reddish-brown. Due to its size, specimens are found as mineral inclusions within the host rock and are primarily of interest in the field of micromineralogy. ## Physical Properties The mineral exhibits a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent. It shows no cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal, which is typical for garnet group minerals. Its calculated density is 4.31 g/cm³. Hardness has not been measured due to the small size of the grains, but it is estimated to be typical for garnets. ## Colors and Varieties Observed colors are deep red and reddish-brown. No color varieties or commercial varieties of this mineral are known. ## History and Name The mineral was officially described in 2010 by Joel D. Grice and T. Scott Ercit. Its name honors Georg Menzer (1897–1989), a German crystallographer who first described the crystal structure of garnet in 1925. The suffix "-(Y)" in the name indicates the dominance of yttrium among rare earth elements in its chemical composition. ## Uses Menzerite-(Y) has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible due to its extreme rarity and specific chemical composition.

Most commonly, these are garnets from the almandine-pyrope series, quartz, plagioclase, biotite, and orthopyroxene. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of menzerite-(Y) in the world is its type locality – a small, unnamed island within the Gagnon Terrane formation in Quebec, Canada.
