Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of melcheryt is possible only through advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Visual identification in the field or in a collection is impossible. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other colorless secondary minerals found in carbonatites, such as calcite, dolomite, or other rare niobates. Differentiation requires specialized laboratory equipment. ## Crystal Forms Melcheryt forms thin, tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline. They occur as single, isolated crystals or small aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Melcheryt is a secondary mineral, forming in late-stage, hydrothermal alteration zones within carbonatites. It crystallizes in rock cavities and fractures from solutions rich in niobium, barium, and sodium. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other niobium minerals, such as pyrochlore, niobo-aeschynite-(Ce), and lueshite, as well as with barite, dolomite, and fluorite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of melcheryt in the world (type locality) is the Catalão I carbonatite complex in Goiás state, Brazil.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a melcheryt specimen depends on the presence of well-formed, identifiable crystals on the rock matrix. Due to its microscopic size, the most important criterion is the confirmation of the mineral's authenticity by a reputable laboratory. Specimens with clearly visible, albeit small, crystals are most desirable. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality – the Catalão I complex in Brazil. Collector material is practically unavailable on the market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to its extreme rarity, small crystal size, and delicacy, melcheryt specimens should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any attempts at cleaning may irreversibly damage the specimen. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with any chemicals, ultrasonics, temperature changes, and moisture. The crystals are very small and fragile, susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage Specimens should be stored exclusively in a specialized "micromount" box, protecting them from dust, shocks, and physical contact. Do not expose them to sunlight or moisture.
