Marsturite is a rare sodium, calcium, and manganese silicate, forming pink, tabular crystals with a vitreous luster.

## Characteristics Marsturite is a rare mineral from the silicate group, belonging to the pyroxenoid family. It occurs as small, tabular or bladed crystals, often forming radial or chaotic aggregates. Its most characteristic feature is its delicate, pink to reddish-pink color. Crystals are usually transparent to translucent and exhibit a vitreous luster, which can transition to pearly on cleavage surfaces. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively resistant to scratching. Its density is higher than average, approximately 3.46 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in two directions, visible as flat, shiny surfaces on fractured specimens. The luster is predominantly vitreous. ## Colors and Varieties Marsturite occurs in shades from light pink to reddish-pink, and sometimes can be almost colorless. Color is its main distinguishing feature. No named varieties of this mineral have been identified. ## History and Name The name marsturite comes from the surnames of two American mineralogists: Margery (Marge) and Sturdivant (Stur) Peacor, in recognition of their contributions to mineralogy. The mineral was first described in 1978 by Pete J. Dunn, Donald R. Peacor, William B. Simmons Jr., and Roland C. Rouse based on specimens found in the Franklin Mine in New Jersey, USA. ## Uses Marsturite has no industrial applications. It is valued solely as a rare and visually attractive collector's mineral.

## Genesis Marsturite is a metamorphic mineral. It forms in manganese ore deposits that have undergone high-temperature contact metamorphism. It occurs in veins cutting through rocks rich in manganese oxides and silicates. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with many other manganese minerals. In its type locality (Franklin, New Jersey), it was found in association with willemite, franklinite, zincite, rhodonite, bustamite, manganaxinite-(Mn), as well as rarer minerals such as gonyerite, yeatmanite, or mcgovernite. ## Localities The most important and classic occurrence of marsturite is the Franklin Mine in Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, which is its type locality. It has also been found in the Wessels Mine in Hotazel, in the Kalahari Manganese Field in the Republic of South Africa, and in the Valgraveglia Mine in Liguria, Italy.

## Quality Criteria The most prized marsturite specimens are characterized by an intense pink color and well-formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic, radial aggregates. The size of the crystals is also important – the larger and more transparent they are, the more valuable the specimen. A contrasting rock matrix or co-occurrence with other rare minerals, e.g., from the Franklin Mine, adds to its appeal. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the type locality – the Franklin Mine in New Jersey – are by far the most sought after by collectors. They feature a classic appearance and have historical value. Specimens from South Africa (Wessels Mine) are also valued, often forming attractive compositions with other manganese minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Marsturite specimens should be cleaned very carefully. It is best to use a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, the specimen can be rinsed in distilled water, then thoroughly dried with compressed air or left to air dry completely at room temperature. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact of the mineral with acids and other aggressive chemicals, which can damage its surface. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners. Marsturite is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Due to their rarity and delicacy, marsturite specimens should be stored in separate, padded collector boxes to prevent scratches and mechanical damage. They should be protected from dust and moisture. Exposure to strong sunlight is not recommended, although there is no evidence of fading.
