Visual identification in the field or in a collection is impossible due to the microscopic size of the crystals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Marchettiite can be confused with other rare urates found in guano deposits, such as guanine, uric acid, or salammoniac. Differentiation requires specialized laboratory analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms microscopic, elongated crystals with bladed or acicular habits. These crystals often arrange themselves into radial, rosette aggregates and spherulites, and also form thin coatings on the surface of the host rock.

## Genesis Marchettiite is a mineral of biogenic origin. It forms as a result of chemical reactions occurring within guano deposits, which are the excrement of seabirds. It forms under conditions of low temperature and humidity, likely through the slow dehydration of other hydrated urates. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with other minerals typical of guano deposits, such as guanine, uric acid, salammoniac, gypsum, and brushite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for marchettiite in the world is its type locality – Guañape Norte Island, located off the coast of Peru.

## Cleaning Specimens should be handled with the utmost care. Due to their microscopic nature and potential solubility, wet cleaning is not recommended.
