Malhmoodite is an extremely rare iron and zirconium phosphate, forming microscopic, yellow crystals.

## Characteristics Malhmoodite is a hydrated iron and zirconium phosphate. It occurs as extremely small, tabular or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. These crystals form rosette-like or radial aggregates of yellow, yellowish-green to greenish-yellow color. Due to its microscopic size, its visual features are difficult to assess without specialized equipment. ## Physical Properties Malhmoodite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. The hardness of the mineral has not been precisely determined due to the very small size of the crystals, but it is estimated to be around 3 on the Mohs scale. It is a relatively dense mineral, with a calculated density of 3.03 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs in shades of yellow, from light yellow through yellowish-green to greenish-yellow. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Malhmoodite was discovered in the South-Platte pegmatite in Jefferson County, Colorado (USA) and described in 1994 by William B. Simmons, Eugene E. Foord, and Karen J. Wenrich. The mineral is named in honor of Shaikh N. Malhmood, an amateur mineralogist from Colorado, who first found material containing this mineral.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of malhmoodite is possible only with advanced laboratory techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe (EDS/WDS), or X-ray diffraction (XRD). In field or collecting conditions, it is impossible to distinguish from other microscopic, yellow secondary minerals. ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other secondary phosphates, such as strengite or phosphosiderite, but malhmoodite is distinguished by its unique chemical composition containing zirconium. Definitive differentiation requires chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, elongated and flattened (bladed) crystals, often aggregated into radial or rosette-like clusters. The crystals are too small to observe their details with the naked eye.

Geological environment

## Genesis Malhmoodite is a secondary mineral that crystallizes in the late stage of granite pegmatite evolution. It forms as a result of hydrothermal processes or weathering, in zones altered by these processes. Its presence depends on specific geochemical conditions, including the availability of phosphorus, iron, and zirconium. ## Mineral Associations In its typical locality (South Platte, Colorado), it co-occurs with quartz, microcline, albite, goethite, hematite, zircon, strengite, and phosphosiderite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of malhmoodite in the world is its type locality: the pegmatite in the South Platte district, Jefferson County, Colorado, USA.

For collectors specializing in "micromount" minerals, any specimen with well-formed, even if very small, crystal aggregates on the matrix rock will be valuable. The abundance of crystals on the matrix and the aesthetics of the aggregate increase the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the historical type locality in Colorado, USA. Material from this location is practically unavailable on the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity and fragility of specimens, cleaning is not recommended. Any attempts may irreversibly damage the microscopic crystals. Specimens should be analyzed in their found state. ## What to Avoid Any physical contact, including touching, and exposure to chemicals, ultrasound, and vibrations should be avoided. Temperature and humidity changes can also be harmful. ## Storage Malhmoodite specimens, usually found on matrix rock, require storage under stable conditions. It is best to keep them in sealed, padded "micromount" boxes, which protect against dust, light, and mechanical damage.
