Makarochkinite is a very rare mineral of the aenigmatite group, found as black, tabular crystals in fenites.

## Characteristics Makarochkinite is an extremely rare mineral belonging to the aenigmatite group. It occurs as small, tabular or bladed crystals, usually not exceeding a few millimeters in length. It is black in color and opaque. Its luster is described as metallic to submetallic. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness range of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale. It is relatively brittle, and its density, calculated from the chemical formula, is approximately 3.84 g/cm³. It exhibits weak, unidirectional cleavage. ## Colors and Varieties The only known color of makarochkinite is black. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was named in honor of Boris Makarochkin (1929-1994), a Russian mineralogist and geochemist from the Ilmen Nature Reserve in the Urals, who made significant contributions to the study of the geology of this region. It was approved as a new mineral by the IMA in 1996, and its description was published in 1998. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, makarochkinite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Preliminary identification is based on its black color, metallic luster, tabular crystal habit, and specific occurrence environment (fenites). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Minerals with a similar appearance and occurring in similar parageneses include other black minerals of the aenigmatite group (e.g., aenigmatite, wilkinsonite) and some amphiboles (e.g., arfvedsonite) and pyroxenes (e.g., aegirine). Definitive differentiation requires chemical composition analysis, especially to confirm the presence of beryllium, titanium, and aluminum in appropriate proportions. ## Crystal Forms Makarochkinite crystals are typically small, up to 2 mm in length. They adopt a tabular or bladed form and often create irregular clusters or aggregates with other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Makarochkinite forms as a result of metasomatic processes. It has been identified in fenites – rocks formed in the contact zone of alkaline intrusions with silica-rich sedimentary rocks (biotite gneisses). Its formation is associated with the interaction of fluids originating from a nepheline-syenite intrusion. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a number of other minerals typical of alkaline environments, such as microcline, nepheline, aegirine, arfvedsonite, fluorite, aenigmatite, zircon, pyrochlore, and titanite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of makarochkinite in the world (type locality) is the Potanina intrusion in the Ilmeno-Vishnevogorsky Complex in the Southern Urals, Russia.

## Quality Criteria As a "micromount" mineral, the value of a specimen is primarily determined by the quality and development of the crystals, rather than their size. The most desirable specimens are those with sharp, well-defined, undamaged crystals that stand out clearly from the matrix rock. A rich association with other rare minerals is also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of makarochkinite specimens is its type locality in the Southern Urals, Russia. Material from this location is extremely difficult to obtain.

## Cleaning Given its rarity and potential fragility, only gentle cleaning with a soft, dry brush is recommended to remove dust. Avoid any wet cleaning methods unless absolutely necessary. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, acids, and ultrasonic cleaners.
