## Characteristics Maikainite is a very rare, opaque sulfide with a metallic luster and a steel-gray to grayish-black color. It most often forms intergrowths with other sulfides, especially with germanium minerals, which makes its isolation and visual identification impossible without advanced analytical techniques. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is completely opaque. No colored or commercial varieties have been identified. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1983 by a team of Russian researchers (E. M. Spiridonov, T. N. Chvileva, N. F. Sokolova, V. M. Kachalovskaya, B. S. Krasivskaya). The name comes from its discovery locality – the Maikain gold deposit in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan, which remains the only known occurrence worldwide. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence only as microscopic grains, maikainite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valuable acquisition for advanced systematic collections.

The key distinguishing feature, detectable only analytically, is its unique chemical composition, especially the simultaneous occurrence of molybdenum and germanium. ## Crystal Forms This mineral does not form well-developed crystals. It occurs exclusively as anhedral (irregular, lacking its own faces) grains and aggregates, often as complex intergrowths with other sulfide minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Maikainite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zone of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. It forms as a result of hydrothermal processes and weathering, replacing earlier minerals such as bornite, tennantite, and germanite. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with a rich assemblage of other, often rare, minerals. Its typical associations include germanite, gallite, renierite, mawsonite, stottite, tennantite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, barite, and native gold. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence of maikainite worldwide is its type locality – the Maikain polymetallic deposit in Kazakhstan.

The mineral is not commercially mined, and specimens appear on the collector's market sporadically, most often from old research collections.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens of maikainite, typically microscopic inclusions within the host rock, are extremely delicate. Cleaning should be kept to an absolute minimum. Only careful dust removal with a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance is permissible. Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid As a sulfide, maikainite can be susceptible to oxidation.
