Luogufengite

Chemical formula: Fe3+2O3

Luogufengite is a rare iron oxide, a natural analogue of maghemite-C, occurring as microscopic inclusions in iron meteorites.

## Characteristics Luogufengite is an iron oxide, approved as a distinct mineral in 2023. It occurs as extremely small, nanometric inclusions and aggregates within other minerals, primarily in iron meteorites. Due to its microscopic size, its visual characteristics cannot be assessed with the naked eye. Observations using advanced microscopic techniques show it as a phase coexisting with other iron oxides. ## Physical Properties As a nanomineral, its physical properties such as hardness, luster, or density have not been determined by standard methods and are unknown. It is opaque. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality - Luogufen (罗崮分) in Shandong Province, eastern China, where the meteorite in which it was identified was found. It was described by a team of scientists led by Chuanyao Wang and approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2023 under number IMA2023-020. Its discovery was made possible by the application of transmission electron microscopy.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of luogufengite is impossible without advanced laboratory equipment, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and spectroscopy. It is a diagnostic mineral exclusively at the level of scientific research. ## Distinguishing from similar minerals Luogufengite is structurally related to maghemite and hematite. Maghemite-C (synthetic analogue) has an identical structure. Distinguishing it from these phases requires precise electron diffraction analysis at the nanometer scale. ## Crystal forms It is observed as nanometric, irregular grains and aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Luogufengite forms as a result of oxidation processes occurring in iron meteorites, likely under low-temperature conditions. It is a product of weathering or transformation of other iron minerals in an extraterrestrial or terrestrial environment (after the meteorite fall). ## Mineral associations It coexists with kamacite, taenite, cohenite, schreibersite, maghemite, and hematite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence (type locality) is the Luogufen iron meteorite found in Shandong Province, China.

Rarity

Extremely rare

For collectors

## Quality criteria Luogufengite is not a collector's mineral in the traditional sense. Its value is purely scientific. For meteorite collectors, the value lies in the Luogufen meteorite specimen itself, in which this mineral was discovered, as material from the type locality for a new mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing luogufengite (meteorites) should not be wet-cleaned, especially if signs of oxidation are visible. Dust can be removed with a soft brush or compressed air. ## What to avoid Moisture and chemicals should be strictly avoided, as they can accelerate oxidation processes and destroy not only the microscopic luogufengite but also the entire meteorite specimen. Protect from sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Store in a dry environment, preferably in a sealed container with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). Display should be in a closed cabinet, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
