Loudounite is an extremely rare, colorless or white silicate mineral, found as microscopic crystals in nepheline vugs.

## Characteristics Loudounite is a hydrated sodium, calcium, and zirconium silicate. It forms extremely small, bladed or platy crystals, typically not exceeding 0.5 mm in length. It occurs as single, scattered crystals or small, radial aggregates. Due to its microscopic size, its visual features are difficult to observe without magnification. ## Physical Properties Loudounite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster and are transparent. Hardness and density have not been precisely measured due to the small amount of available material and the microscopic size of the crystals. The mineral is brittle. ## Colors and Varieties Loudounite is colorless to white. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was named after Loudoun County in Virginia (USA), where its type locality is situated. It was described and approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1982. The first scientific description was prepared by J.D. Grice, G. Perrault, and D.C. Harris. ## Uses Loudounite has no industrial application. It is of purely scientific significance and is an object of interest for specialized collectors of rare minerals (so-called micromounts).

## Identification Identification of loudounite is only possible using advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Visual identification in the field or in a collection is impossible due to its microscopic size and lack of characteristic macroscopic features. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Loudounite can be confused with many other white or colorless microminerals occurring in similar environments, such as analcime, natrolite, or other zeolites. Differentiation requires specialized laboratory equipment. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are very small, in the form of elongated blades or thin plates, often flattened. They usually occur as single crystals or form small, radial aggregates in rock cavities.

Geological environment

## Genesis Loudounite forms under hydrothermal conditions in the late stage of nepheline syenite crystallization. It crystallizes in vugs and small cavities within the rock, filling free spaces. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals in nepheline syenites. It is most commonly associated with: nepheline, microcline, aegirine, analcime, natrolite, eudialyte, catapleiite, and weloganite. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence of loudounite in the world is the Goose Creek Quarry in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA. This is its type locality.

All specimens available on the collector's market originate from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing loudounite, typically micromounts, should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any attempts at cleaning risk irreversible damage or loss of the microscopic crystals. If necessary, dust can be removed very carefully using a photographic air blower. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with any chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and sudden temperature changes. Specimens are extremely delicate and susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage Specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized micromount boxes that protect them from dust, shocks, and damage. They should not be touched or exposed to external factors.
