## Characteristics Lotharmeyerite is a hydrated zinc and calcium arsenate, belonging to the tsumcorite group. This mineral forms very small, tabular or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 1 mm in length. They typically occur as radial aggregates, rosettes, or crusts on host rocks. Its most characteristic feature is its intense, orange-red to red color. ## Physical Properties Lotharmeyerite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. They are transparent to translucent. Hardness on the Mohs scale is approximately 3, and density ranges between 4.1 and 4.19 g/cm³. This mineral is relatively brittle. ## Colors and Varieties Lotharmeyerite occurs in shades from orange-red to dark red. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Julius Lothar Meyer (1830-1895), a German chemist who independently developed the periodic table of elements, similar to Dmitri Mendeleev. Lotharmeyerite was first described in 1983 by Paul Keller, Heinz Hess, and Pete J. Dunn based on samples from the Ojuela Mine in Mexico. ## Uses Lotharmeyerite has no industrial application. It is solely a mineral of scientific and collector's interest, sought after for its rarity and attractive color.

## Genesis Lotharmeyerite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation zones (gossans) of polymetallic ore deposits rich in arsenic and zinc. It forms as a result of the weathering of primary ore minerals, such as sphalerite and arsenopyrite. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other rare arsenates, such as adamite, köttigite, legrandite, scorodite, smithsonite, tsumcorite, and gartrellite. In its type locality (Ojuela Mine), it was found in association with legrandite and adamite. ## Localities The most important and well-known lotharmeyerite localities worldwide include: - Mexico: Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Durango (type locality). - Chile: Veta Negra Mine, Copiapó, Atacama. - Germany: Clara Mine in Wolfach, Black Forest. - Greece: Mines in the Laurion region, Attica.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned only with extreme care, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its brittleness and solubility in acids, contact with water and any chemical agents should be avoided. The safest method is dry cleaning. ## What to Avoid Absolutely avoid contact with water, acids, and other chemicals that can damage or dissolve the mineral. Lotharmeyerite is brittle, so it must be protected from impacts and vibrations.
