Llantenesite is a very rare copper and aluminum hydroxychloride-selenate, forming microscopic, hexagonal crystals of an intense blue color.

## Characteristics Llantenesite is a mineral from the selenate group, distinguished by its complex chemical composition and intense blue color. It occurs as very small, hexagonal, tabular crystals that rarely exceed 0.1 mm in diameter. These crystals form rosette-like or spherical aggregates, as well as thin coatings and crusts on rock surfaces. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, its visual features are most often observed under magnification. ## Physical Properties Llantenesite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. They are transparent and have a pale blue streak. The Mohs hardness is estimated to be around 2, making it a very soft mineral. The density calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is 3.33 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is characterized by a uniform, intensely blue color. Final confirmation requires advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy or EDS analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms microscopic, hexagonal crystals with a tabular habit, often very thin. Geological environment

## Genesis Llantenesite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones (gossans) of hydrothermal polymetallic deposits. Its crystallization occurs under low temperature and pressure conditions, as a result of the weathering of primary ores containing copper, aluminum, and selenium in the presence of chloride ions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare selenates and selenites. It is most often accompanied by ahlfeldite, schmiederite, anglesite, barite, chalcomenite, gypsum, hematite, jarosite, quartz, and hydrated iron oxides (limonite). ## Localities The only confirmed locality of llantenesite in the world is its type locality - the Llantenes mine, located in Quebrada de Llantenes, about 25 km northeast of Copiapó in the Atacama Region, Chile.

## Quality Criteria The quality of llantenesite specimens is primarily assessed based on the richness and aesthetics of the crystal aggregates. The absence of damage to delicate crystals and association with other rare minerals are also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of llantenesite specimens is its type locality in Chile. All specimens available on the collector's market come from this single location, making them exceptionally desirable for collectors specializing in rare and systematic minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its extreme rarity, small crystal size, and delicacy, llantenesite specimens should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any attempts at cleaning may irreversibly damage the mineral. If it is necessary to remove loose dust, this can be done very carefully with a soft brush or a photographic air blower, avoiding direct contact with the crystals. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, detergents, and any other chemicals should be absolutely avoided. The mineral is very soft (hardness ~2), so it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. It should be protected from vibrations, impacts, and high temperatures. ## Storage Llantenesite specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized, sealed "micromount" boxes that protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
